It looks like the site is back up.

From: guest (Anonymous51) , 169 months, post #22
The site is down again. I keep getting a "404 Not Found" page. Does anyone know if Zach did this deliberately? Or is it an error? And does anyone know when it will get fixed?

From: guest (Brayn) , 169 months, post #23
I dont know anonymous, it could be temporary, cause the "splash page" for transform.to/~zach/fb is still ther. I'd say leave it for a few hours and then i'll email zach and ask for a heads up.

From: guest (Anonymous51) , 169 months, post #24
It's been down for over five hours now. Maybe someone should get in touch with Zach.

From: guest (Brayn) , 169 months, post #25
I've shot him a mail, we'll see what the reply is, i hope FB hasnt been hacked or something.

From: guest (Blackjack) , 169 months, post #26
Yes I was very sad to find it down yesterday, I hope it's not intentionally pulled.

From: guest (Anonymous51) , 169 months, post #27
Now, apparently, the entire transform.to server is down. I hope Zach did that on purpose. Otherwise, the problem just got worse.

From: guest (Anonymous51) , 169 months, post #28
Okay, the transform.to server is back up, but the Fiction Branches index page and all the stories aren't.

It has been completely down over here in the UK for about 48 hours at least - does anyone know what the blazes is going on?

From: guest (Anonymous51) , 169 months, post #30
I just got an e-mail from Zach (I e-mailed him two days ago about this). He says that it seems the site has been taken down for "using too many resources". He says that he's contacting the site administrators to see what's happening.

From: guest (Blackjack) , 169 months, post #31
That's a shame, he might have to find a more robust (and possibly expensive) hosting provider.

From: guest (Brayn) , 169 months, post #32
Yea, got the same message from Zach. Personally, i get the feeling its the way the site accesses the story database, the database has gotten very big in the last 10 years and while it may have been fine back in the day, it could be too big for it's own good now.

From: guest (Anonymous51) , 169 months, post #33
Does this mean that the proposed Fiction Branches 3.0 may never see the light of day?

From: guest (King Extol) , 169 months, post #34
When it's back:
1. Can someone PLEASE speed up the search engine? It was driving me crazy before!

2. Can someone please add my story idea? (see the "you are what you wish" thread.)

From: guest (Brayn) , 169 months, post #35
Don't think so, just a matter of Zach maybe re-writing some parts of the site to work faster, or "removing" the extra stories that dont really see much action, like Altered Fates, or that Virtual one.

From: guest (HolidayGuy) , 169 months, post #36
I dont think that the other stories should be deleted as i doubt its a matter of space. The Unending BE Adventure Archive has a heck of a lot more branches than FB.

From: guest (AnonyMouse) , 169 months, post #37
I agree with HolidayGuy - a lot of the old threads inspire the new ones, and speaking purely for myself, are sometimes more fun to write on than the new ones.

I suspect the problem is, however, the size of the database and the resulting resource use made by calls on it. Not sure how to fix that with the software involved, largely because I'm neither a techie nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

From: guest (Brayn) , 169 months, post #38
Guys, I'm speculating here, i didnt say Zach was going to take the stories down or delete them... hell, i didnt even say if it was something like that causing these problems to be certain.

And unfortuantly, transform.to's server (FB's) is much different to bearchive (Unending BE's) server -namely that people pay for the bearchive server by the member area... noone pays for the transform.to server, so it's got less resources available.

Certainly, there are episodes that are basically spam (like people's comments that should have been posted in the forum, but weren't), and those could be removed, but I don't think it would make that much of a difference. And I don't believe there are any "extra" or "lesser" stories on the site. Every story has the potential of eventually turning into something great. Removing those stories removes that potential. Believe me, I've added onto probably at least a dozen episodes that looked (no offense to the authors, but) kind of stupid, and turned them into long and (in my opinion) great stories.

Of course, all of that is moot at this point, since the stories no longer exist. Online anyway. I really really hope they do still exist somewhere. If the site ever comes back, the first thing I'm doing is making copies of all of my favorite stories and saving them to my computer. I wish I would have already done that. Now that Glamour story I was doing with Erin is gone ... and I was almost finished with it! Just another dozen episodes or so. Does anyone have a copy of that? Probably not, but I still wanted to ask.

Oh, and the second thing I'll do if the site ever comes back is give King Extol his story. I can't guarantee that it'll be more than one episode, though.

Hi,

to anonymous51

The Glamour story you did with Erin, is it the one where the people in town switch bodies with others in the quantum leap style because i've got them saved on my computer in a doc file.
