"The Black Rabbit" is the fourth live action M2F short film produced by Mako Pictures. Warning: May contain spoilers!!!

The transformation sequence in this movie felt a bit more mainstream and not as focused as previous works from the Mako Pictures team. The transformation wasn't overly drawn-out or complicated, and didn't have the character suffer through the changes as in their past films. Surely a new approach to the subject of such physical transformation for the team.

While I normally enjoy the idea of a painless and relatively uneventful transformation, I found watching such a transformation surprisingly boring and empty. While that is in no-way a blemish on the team's work, it does drive home the notion that what one may desire in life, isn't always the most exciting (or entertaining) way to live. I give them cudos for attempting this angle on the subject of physical metamorphosis.

Although explained quite well by the story (and the character's occupation), the character seemed to acclimate quickly to their new existence, with very little to no learning curve for adapting appropriate behavior. Again another notion that I'd always thought I enjoyed, but that doesn't seem to play well in a story-telling environment.

I did enjoy the focus on the character's skillful and knowledgeable application of cosmetics after the transformation, although it seemed a bit assuming that "she" would be either skillful or knowledgeable so quickly. I would have preferred to seen the character struggle a bit more with the adaptation to these new things, but then that is perhaps my own personal preference.

The main actress was excellent at portraying the emotional journey that our hero/ine went through after the transformation and was incredibly adept at portraying a woman discovering her own sensuality, as well as a man (or woman) who was pained by the choice of losing a loved one, in order to save them.

The story, as always left me wanting to know what happened next.

The extra features commentary was nothing special in my opinion. Probably because it seemed to reiterate what Mako has discussed with us, here, over the years. That and it could have used a bit of polish, perhaps. Still the video accompanying it was fun to see, for the transformation fan.

Overall, I'd not rate this as the best of Mako Pictures' films, but I do give it high-marks for traveling a bit off of their norm for their usual transformation work. Although I don't give it my highest approval, it is still worthy of a view.

The tone I gathered was that all the 'adaptation' was acctually magically induced as well. in other words, it wasn't just him acting female, he was mentally altered. Just my take.

I guess what your trying to say chrisfabo. Is that his X,Y inside his mind was alter when he was transform from the chemical reaction.

I think whenever you read or watch a story involving a Transformation... you have to suspend disbelief to a point. Everyone in this community has their own idea of what they want to see and hear in a TF. It's all subjective. But I do find people to be more critical if a Transformation isn't laid out the way they would prefer.

The movies I make are also not full length features... so I also have less time to inject any form of psychological effects a Transformation might have. I feel I've actually taken more time to do this... than most bigger budget TF movies have of the past.

Most TF movies hardly spend any time at all with a victims character taking the time to either let the effects settle in... or ever really explain why they're behaviors change after a TF. The film makers just assume you will suspend your disbelief and just go along for the ride. In addition, I also think they just don't want to spend a lot of time on it by either moving the story along - or play it safe - and don't want to have people think they're strange by focusing a long time on the aftermaths of a TF.

Some examples are below:

An American Werewolf In London - sure he's a werewolf - but is it really ever explained why he goes out killing people? No... we just except it based on what he looks like - and we already come into the story with a pre-conceived notion that werewolves are bad.

Dr. Jekyll & Ms. Hide - Sean Young turns out to be evil and nothing like her male self. Not a lot of time spent on why.

Zerophilia - I think the main characer spends maybe 20sec in the mirror and within the next few scenes... seems to have adjusted to the TF.

Deathstalker - The guard pretty quickly adjusts to his/her new body and already walks and behave like a woman within a min.

As for THE BLACK RABBIT... the method of TF is one of magic. Koyona is introduced as someone who practices in the dark arts (witchcraft). So IMO - once you introduce a "magical" element to the mix... it's kind of hard to be nit picky about the effects of a TF. This is a fictional/fantasy tale. ELEVEN and TLPS had more of a scientific approach to them. And THE KISS had more of a curse approach.

I have no problem with people reviewing my material - and having either a positive or negative reaction. CJ didn't attack me at all. He laid out a subjective review of what he liked and didn't like about THE BLACK RABBIT. And I thank him for it. This also gives me a chance to explain why I did something the way I did... or maybe the way I look at TF content as a whole.

Anyways... that's my Monday morning coffee break conversation :)

Just got my DVD of the Black Rabbit in the mail and watched it. In many ways, I think this is Mako's best picture. I think this and The Last Piece Standing are the strongest visually. I don't want to give too much away, but I agree with CJ that I wanted more. In some ways it's a feature-length idea crammed into a 30 minute short. But having said that, it's very well done, and the ending is satisfying (love the very last shot!).

I thought the female lead was very good. In fact, my only real criticism is in terms of casting. Not that Eric was bad, but I would have liked to see someone more weathered (and more rugged) in the lead male role of a master CIA agent. But having watched the extras, I'm sure it made the shoot easier having Eric play the part.

Considering how quickly they shot this film, the quality is amazing. It truly is wonderful film-making, very professional, and I believe anyone who visits this site would enjoy watching it.

As for the transformation, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved seeing the close-up details. The focus on some body parts not normally associated with gender transformations (such as nose and ears). Wonderfully done and not boring at all, in my opinion.

I also liked the structure, how we learned more about the character and situation through flashbacks. And, as I mentioned, the ending is great. Love all the shots through the closing credits. Great job. Thumbs up!!!

LOL - that was awesome!! I thought the same thing as we were shooting it. But Matt Damon was unavailable at the time ;) Thanks for the review femur. Always appreciate people taking the time to let us know what they thought of our stuff.
