Comment: Herodotus
Herodotus

I'm not really sure if it fits in mythology... Herodotus (father of history) tells that actually there was a man who touched two snakes and then he become a woman... anyone knows more?...

This is probably the legend of Tiresias, who hit and killed one of a pair of snakes, and in the process was transformed into a woman.

Eddie is wright ... is was definitely Tiresias

The story can be found in Ovid's 'Metamorphosis', a novel which contains dozens of transformations. Petronius also addresses Tiresias' transformation in his 'Satyricon'.

The Tieresius story was actually around for several centures before Ovid. It's mentioned in some other poems and a few fragments, although admittably the version in The Metamorphosis is probably the best known.

And I'm fairly sure this does not occur in Herodotus, either. I've read his _Histories_ in full once, partially several times, and don't recall him mentioning Teiresias or any other similar myth.

As memory serves me, I remember readim\ng, I believe it was from Robert Graves, that even the Greeks weren't above fooling arround with myths for literary reasons, and that some people believe that the story of Tiresias turing into a woman and living as prostitue before being turned back into a man over a petty argument between Zeus and Hera was never an authentic myth, but was intended as humor from day one. I don't know if this is true, but I remember reading it.

Actually, the sorces we have have for that story are all Roman, aren't they. All the more so about messing with myths for literary reasons.

From: classics reader* , 241 months, post #8
No, there are Greek sources as well, like Apollodoros.

What are the sources... can you quote proper references so those of use interested can follow your information for yourselves.

much appreciated

If you look for Tiresias here at Metamorphose you'll find a bit more. There's even a great comic strip about Tiresias from French authors Letendre and Rossi. It's in two parts: "l'Outrage" and "La Rvlation".
