Swiftner, my laptop doesn't have room for my monster either. That's why it's on an external hard drive. =)

To address Ky's questions in the order asked:

IRC has been slowly dying for a while now. That's why I've been exploring other options of sharing files. In fact, that was the whole point of this thread to begin with was to prompt discussion on file sharing besides the YouTube sort which has copyright issues. Any questions relating to the IRC channel should be addressed in the forum at fictionmania.xeraweb.com .

The files of my server are currently being "torrented". You need a torrent client to get "all these files".

There is no website or channel. It is a single torrent file as linked on page 2 of this thread.

Yes, you need to download a torrent client to receive the files.

Utorrent is a torrent client favored by myself and several others. A search (or an educated guess) would have led you to www.utorrent.com . You probably did not do enough reading if you're still confused on how to get the files. There are many guides on the aforementioned web site on what torrents are and what to do to utilize them.

The link on page 2 works fine so long as my machine is up and my web server is running (which it has been continously for the last month and a half now, ugh). Your computer just has no idea what to do with it if you do not have a torrent client. See previous paragraph.

Now that I've answered the questions, I will re-iterate my position that I'm not here to help anyone learn how to do things. All the resources are out there. I do recommend Wikipedia.

And again, I do not know how long the torrent will be maintained. I am currently connected to 11 of 25 reported peers. For some reason I don't see any other seeds but I know they exist. Also, my cable bill is going to be due soon and I do not have enough funds to necessarily pay it on time which means my internet may be going down, and with it will be the torrent metadata file, and probably the whole thing unless I come up with about $600. (For some reason, my last check bounced, grrr.) Bad enough my web site went down due to lack of paying bills. Finances are not good for me right now.

I know this is odd, but I've been connected and seeding for about 8 hours now but no one seems to be leaching. The other torrents i have are seeding fine. Everyone must be hiding :-)

Timber I have a 320 GB external but it's full too :-). I have waaaaaay too much crap.

From: guest (Fish) , 201 months, post #64
I've never torrented anything before. Perhaps someone could answer this: why does it always seem like the amount I'm downloading is about 10% of the amount people are uploading FROM me? Is my upload capacity sucking away my available download bandwidth?

From: guest (Fish) , 201 months, post #65
Also, there seems to be a guy who is 60% done with his download, and I have only 10%, but he's downloaded hundreds of MBs from me, but only given me back 5MB. Is that how torrenting is supposed to work?

From: guest , 201 months, post #66
Your questions are perhaps best answered at http://forum.utorrent.com/

From: The Gambler , 201 months, post #67
I've been seeding for a month by now. Since the whole package/torrent is about 42GB, and taking up about 40% of my hard drive space. I might have to cease seeding after Oct 1st, after a month long seeding, due to I have other needs for those space. Been seeding for over 200 percents now(93GB), so I can say I give more than I received.

From: guest (blue) , 201 months, post #68
Everything you've been doing with seeding is very appreciated Gambler. I know if I was running into that problem I'd probably move some of the files and seed 1/2 or 1/4 instead, so if you still would like to seed you might want to consider doing that. All the seeding you've done already is very nice though. Thanks.

From: The Gambler , 201 months, post #69
Doubt you can do "Half" or "quarter" seeding. You might able to select files to download when leeching, but you can't do that when seeding, it's all or nothing--or errors.....

From: guest (blue) , 201 months, post #70
I know you can do it on utorrent. This sounds more complicated than it is. How I do it is, first stop the torrent, then set all files to "don't download" so the priority says "skip" for all of them. This won't delete your files or affect them in any way.

Then I move some files to free up space. It's best to move a bunch of files that are sequential in the torrent rather than pick and choose, due to how sequential files share some of the same "pieces" in a torrent.

Okay, so you have your files copied. If you're making a backup of the whole torrent to somewhere else, you can ignore the next paragraph.

This next part it important, but only applies if for some reason you are only making a backup of the files you're actually going to delete from the computer, and not the full torrent. Make sure you copy the next couple files from the torrent as well, as they will share a piece with the previous file(s), and will get messed up when you set up to seed again. This is normal and expected, just make sure you have a few extra files backed up. (4mb at least, as that's the piece size of this torrent)

Now, once you have files copied just delete enough files from your computer to free up space. Then right click on the torrent and "force re-check". Now you're all set to seed however much of the torrent you left on your computer, since you have no files set to download. Start the torrent and you should be seeding normally, no errors.

That's it. You can seed as few or as many files as you want that way, and methods in other torrent programs would be similar I would think. Hope this was helpful for people to know.

As expected, due to lack of bill payment, my cable and internet service was interrupted. for a few days. Now that it is back up, I have a new ip address, so the metadata file for the server torrent needs to be rebuilt. Once it is ready, it will be running off my temporary web server on my home machine until I can get my main web site back up and running.

Timber's Temporary Web Server

Thanks Timber.

Since Timber didn't mention it I'll mention that you can also donate at Timber's site now to help out. Wish I had some spare cash I could do without right now so I could help.

Oh and Timber, would enabling DHT when you rebuild the torrent be a good thing? I think that would allow the torrent to stay up even if your server goes down, provided people turn on DHT on their torrent client. Not 100% sure though.

From: guest (mono) , 201 months, post #74
Thanks a lot, Timber.
And blue's idea of making a DHT torrent is great as it would relieve Timber of having to set up a tracker all the time.

From: guest (Some Crap Guy) , 201 months, post #75
Hey, I'm kinda a noob at torrents and i can't understand why my torrent isn't downloading anymore. Their 0 seeding and 0 leeching. I'm stuck at 25%,

HElP?

From: Timber , 201 months, post #76
You must have skimmed over my post about how my internet went down, and how since it all routes through my machine, if my machine isn't up, the torrent can die.

Well ladies and gentlemen and furries and others, the torrent is back up. Please go to my temporary web server to update the metadata file. (See link above.)

As for DHT, I already have it enabled. The general issue is that everything right now still runs through my computer, my torrent client coordinates it all, blah blah blah.

I'll be prepping a new mega large torrent soon, though probably nowhere as large as the Server one. And with enough support via donations, I can probably engineer the return of the TG Torrent Tracker that was rather successful the last time it ran.

From: guest (Ky) , 201 months, post #77
Timber can you repost a link to the torrent the one on page 2 wont work and I have my torrent up?

Message deleted by cj. Removing IP address & Port information from plain-text - based on memory of previous requests >>>"Hey, it's working again! Great. Adding the new server.torrent did'nt work for me, but you can add the new tracker url manually, for example in utorrent right click the torrent > Properties > General > Trackers. Add http:// IP & PORT INFO REMOVED FROM PLAIN-TEXT /announce" <<<

I've made a small update for whoever may be interested. Find link above.
