I've been doing this for a long time. Dating myself back to 2400 baud modem days where it took an hour and a half to fill a 3.5" floppy disk. So what am I getting at?

I'm running my IRC server again for a while. Info about it can be found at fictionmania.xeraweb.com . It's not superfast, it can take a lot of waiting, but it has always proven reliable. It is easy to resume files that do not finish properly. It is also one of the easiest ways I can simply share my 40+ gigabytes of video and stuff.

I've experimented with running a web server from my own machine. I'd have to maintain links and stuff, and more importantly, I simply don't have the bandwidth. For what I've got, it'd be like trying to fit a large lake through a straw.

I've experimented with torrents. It wasn't a bad solution overall. However, people are selfish and after a while, all the seeds disappear. And I had to build torrent files, and maintain those, and when my ip address hosting it all changed, then those metadata files would have to be rebuilt. I considered that a semi-success while it lasted.

I'm not going to deal with YouTube, Veoh, Google Video, or any of those. Copyrighted stuff is frowned upon, and most of the time, the good stuff is all copyrighted. As well as often times very large which would require segmenting them.

FTP server would have the same bandwidth issues.

Web downloading: I've made a selection of files available on my commercial web site. People pay for a temporary password and that goes toward paying for that bandwidth but it's very fast.

Mailing copies of those same files are available through my web site.

Email? No way. The files are too large, there would be too much demand on my time.

Once in another thread someone asked why we don't share and if it was so expensive. In all my years doing this, I've shared terabytes. I don't know what everyone else has shared, and yet people think of me as selfish. And is it expensive, yes when you are talking the amount I have. Try to figure out how long it would take to email a single 10mb file if that's the capacity of size of an email, and multiply it by all those "me too" posts. I've monitored the bandwidth when I've made something popular available for convenient download and it's enough to be expensive.

To get back to my original point of this message, my IRC server is up and running for people to access and download that which I share. Constructive thoughts on this thread are always welcome. Be civil and polite since flames will be ignored, and probably blocked by the trusted users.

Man, I'll have to brush up on irc protocol and commands. Haven't been using it for a while.

Thanks Timber. Might drop by to check out what new stuff you have since 2-3 years ago.......

Oh yeah. 2400 Baud? My first modem was 1200 Baud on my AT 286, I think it was Hayes........

where is the site?

Read the instructions at www.fictionmania.xeraweb.com first before asking question(s)......

Scroll up. I provided a clickable link.

Back in my earlier pre-modem days, it was just a large network of friends that traded disks. It helped to go to a school that was very technology oriented in the late 80s.

Current IRC server status is up, 3 files sending, 4 files in queue, and about 1.2gigabytes sent since last night.

For the IRC challenged, here's a link to the files I'm serving. Perhaps it will give you incentive to learn how to download via IRC. These are just filenames, so some items may not be intuitive as to what it is, but most of the items are obvious. Again, to download via IRC, you should scroll up to see the clickable link.

My IRC Server files being shared

Someday I'll have to figure out why I could never get my IRC server running right.

From: guest (argentino) , 203 months, post #11
i dont get it timber, could you please teach me how to download your files??? can you gime me your msn so we can be in touch..

From: guest (Honest Abe) , 203 months, post #12
argentino, read the help pages at the link Timber provided. Its really easy to figure out. Failing that, google or wikipedia IRC help. There are numerous ways to figure IRC out without getting one on one counseling.

From: Timber , 203 months, post #13
I don't even use MSN. I haven't even used any instant messaging programs for several months now. And as I've said countless times before, I'm not here to teach anyone how to use stuff. There are many places where it is documented. Asking me to teach something is going to fall on deaf ears (or blind eyes as this is a message board, heh heh).

My IRC server is running smoothly, sending out files with low wait times currently, and plenty of open queue slots available.

I am currently building a new torrent metadata file that will be all 42+ gigabytes of my file server. (Yeah, I'm trying to create a megahuge torrent.) The link will be on my TG Torrents web site when it is ready. Info on my web page. Link not provided due to copyrighted stuff, and just because I don't want the link on here.

I might have a look see later tonight. You Rock Timber! It's the old days all over again. well without the 56k modem :).

From: Timber , 203 months, post #15
The big torrent is ready to go.

The IRC server is still sending out files with wait times increasing as more people queue up files. 4 sends going on with 10 files in queue. There are also a few other IRC servers running on the same channel each providing files. Nothing like a classical method of sharing files.

Quick update.

IRC server currently offline though I'm idling in the channel. I'm giving all the bandwidth I can spare to to seeding the big torrent of my entire IRC server. Currently 5 people are working on downloading the 42+ gigabytes of files I have to offer. The more people who join in, the faster it will all go for everyone.

I'm seeding the clips Lady Sekhmet compiled again with limited bandwidth. Anyone who has seeded it before is asked to seed again if there is enough people trying to download this.

From: Swiftner , 202 months, post #17
I'll seed it once I get home tonight.

From: Peoplesman , 202 months, post #18
I think Im the farthest right now on the download and I am goin to seed as much as possible but im only at 1.36 gb done right now ;>)

From: Timber , 202 months, post #19
No worries. Estimated time for additional seed creations is still 10 days for full upload. With enough peers, everyone should approach full downloads by then. That's assuming I maintain current bandwidth and keep my computer on all the time, which I cannot guarantee. So for everyone who ever wanted all the stuff I've got to offer, jump on the torrent while you can. The sooner you start your download the faster it will finish (hopefully).

When I copy and paste the like the clips.zip file is 262.9 mb is thst the right size?
