Review: Being John Malkovich
Being John Malkovich
Gender
Various people, including some women, enter a portal which allows them to see, hear, and feel what actor John Malkovich sees, hears, and feels. A woman is in Malkovich when he has sex with another woman. Love triangle (square?) develops between a man, his wife, and a woman he chases, via ...more

Fantastic, fun, bizarre and creative. "Why John Malkovich?" you ask. Who cares! It's a wild ride for a bunch of desperate, not-so-nice people at the end of their rather limited wits. Oh, and Malkovich himself is superb playing... well... himself, in a great caricature of his life as a movie star (with "friend" Charlie Sheen!) plus playing himself posessed by other characters. It only gets wilder as the larger, older, John Malkovich Conspiracy is revealed... all the way to the twist ending.
(SPOILER!)
...in which Craig (John Cusack)ends up permanently trapped inside John Malcovich's infant DAUGHTER!
A delight. Two thumbs up!

This was a very freaky movie. It was disturbing on many levels. It was very artistically done, so it was hard to muster the feeling of "it's just a movie" that helps one cope with most horror movies. The sub-theme of manipulation of other people seems to extend beyond the situations we see. It seems Craig, his wife and maybe others were also being controlled and manipulated by other portals we never saw. Everything wasn't as it seems. Not to get political, but it seemed symbolic of how people in power take the opertunity to exploit those who they have power over whenever they can, whenever it suits them. It seems to show the world as intrinsically nihilistic.

Also, while there were no computers or cyborgs per se, it seemed very cyberpunk in some ways, but without the "fight the power" kind of spirit that usually infuses the genre.
