Why the heck would even LOKI stoop that far?

To answer Shifter's question: It's a little complicated, but I'll
give it a go.
Asgard, the home of the Norse gods, was constantly being attacked
by the giants of Jotunheim and so they were looking for a way to
protect themselves. A giant in disguise offered to help them build
a huge wall around Asgard to keep the giants out, but wanted the
hand of the goddess Freya in marriage as his reward. The gods
refused since if they lost Freya there would be no fertility in the
world.
Enter cunning Loki who tells the gods to agree but set a time limit
the 'man' couldn't hope to meet. So the gods agree, but as the days
go by it becomes obvious this man is not what he seems as he gets
closer and closer to finishing the wall with his giantish strength
and the help of a huge stallion that hauls a wagons full of
boulders for him. This gets the gods pretty mad at Loki and soon
the fire god is desperate to think of a way to stop the mason.
So on the next to last day of the wall being completed a beautiful
mare (Loki in disguise) appears by the side of the road to Asgard
and then runs away luring the giant's stallion into chasing after
her. Without his horse to pull the wagonfulls of boulders the giant
can't complete the wall, thus Freya and (once the gods do the last
bit of work themselves) Asgard are safe.
Loki wasn't seen for a while after that, but when he returned it
was with a newborn eight-legged colt in tow. The stallion obviously
caught up to him while in the form of a mare with predictable
results. Maybe Loki wouldn't have been as upset as the rest of the
gods to see fertility leave the world if he'd known how things were
going to turn out.
