Review: M.A. Foster book The Morphodite
M.A. Foster book The Morphodite
Gender
Laboratory created human has the innate ability to seek out and destroy conspiracies and can change it's physical appearence under certain conditions. Each time it does it changes sex. Sequels include "Transformer", and "Preserver".

Brilliant and fascinating. The transformations are accomplished through a mutation process called "catabolism." The body destroys and remakes itself.

....excruciating, messy, and very convincing. And the results can be difficult to impossible to control, so there's almost no way of telling what will happen once "change" is initiated. Wow.

Just as intriguing is the Morphodite's ability to detect crucial links in conspiracies and events and then "take out" or influence those links. For instance: steal the president's top advisor's next door neighbor's girlfriend's dog..... and bring down the president!
Makes you wonder.

One point: (SPOILER!!)

There are transformations in "The Morphodite" and the second book "Transformer," but none in the third book "Preserver."

I am surprised there are no reviews on this series - it is worth reading for its pure content of GC and consequences that follow - as this is the MAIN STORY LINE. Not to spoil the story, let me be brief: there is a genetic experiment (IN A NEAR AND UNCERTAIN FUTURE) on a person to allow her/im to change gender, but she/he escapes. The three books take you on a roller coaster ride where this person (1) realizes the power she/he has, and (2) uses it to elude detection. The gender change process is not magical or mystical in nature, but extended and painful - the "main character" is judicious in it's useage. Also, a novel touch = each change regresses the character's age, so you as the reader see a large portion of each life as a new sex. I liked the series - one of my first exposures to GC in SF. Still available in used book stores, look for it - buy it - enjoy. To my knowledge the writer never returned to this theme in later books, so I guess he used up all his ideas. Worth the read.

I own the original DAW paperbacks from the early '80s, but I recently saw an omnibus version (from DAW) of the three novels in a local Borders called "The Transformer Trilogy."

I definitely recommend the books. As noted before, the TG is mostly in the first two parts (and is hinted at only in vague flashback in the third). However, all three of the novels are very well written and collectively tell a fascinating story.
