TG is practically the main story in this book--there are more parts to the story that don't deal with that, however it's a constant element introduced right up front that stays throughout the entire book, ending with a happy, pregnant former male hero.

Chalker's writing gets wearisome once you've read enough of his books, because he re-uses so many plot devices from book to book, and his attitudes about society and sex roles are a little... well, they seem very 1970s-oriented. I.E. instead of being delicately nuanced, and acknowledging what science has learned the last 20+ years about the genuine emotional and other differences between men and women psychologically, he sort of assumes all differences are just social attitudes and little more. This gets wearisome, as does the premise that somehow being a woman is a curse.

However, the book is a lot of fun, the TG stuff is handled pretty darn well, and it's an enjoyable read. Probably the best of Chalker's books. I agree that he probably harbors TG fantasies of his own as this keeps showing up in book after book by him, however, this is by far his best treatment of the subject.

A fun book. Perhaps the most openly erotic treatment of a TG theme in a "straight" sci-fi novel. The TG elements are introduced almost immediately and remain a dominant theme throughout. This was the book that convinced me that Chalker harbors TG fantasies of his own. The main story is also fun. Nice sci-fi / conspiracy stuff.

This is Chalker's best exploration of both identity issues and of gender roles.

Interesting in points.

I feel this is the best of Chalker's books...in many ways reads like TG fiction.

Given the choice I'd pick this as the best of Chalker's books. It uses many of the same plot devices as his previous books, to wit: the Big Computer That Controls Everything, the use of Turning Someone Into A Bimbo To Punish Them, and the Big Confusing Conspiracy. That tells you almost everything you need to know right there.
