Review: Jack Chalker
Jack Chalker
Gender, Animal, Furry
Many of Mr. Chalker's books have gender changes in form or another.

Chalker has some cool ideas coupled with an irritating writing style and a tendency to re-use the same tricks. YMMV depending on whether you like the cool ideas enough to overcome the clunkiness. I'd probably give most of these a 2.

Jack Chalker is a hack, but if you're into massive transformations, he's also the only game in town. You'll quickly find that he is an author limited to a small number of hackneyed plot devices, far too numerous to mention here. He reminds me of a Mad-Libs author: you could change all of the character names and wind up with the exact same book. But, as I said, transformations galore.

I don't want to parrot other reviews so I will say I agree Jack L. Chalker is a real interesting read for collectors of transformation - especially his Well World and Soul Rider's books. For the TG interest, stay with "Downtiming" and "Identity Matrix", except for good parts in the Well World series (usually at the end when all the characters get their "Just Reward" in a god-like final strike. (Example: one horrible ex-drug lord, who has just spent a good bit of the story as a female duck-like character, is sent back to earth - as a voluptuous native Indian woman - but mute, so she cannot tell her captors who she really is - they mistreat her and justice is achieved! Ha!) I like his work - but then I like Piers Anthony too.
