Peter Beagle book The Innkeeper's Song
Animal, Gender | |
There is a character who changes back and forth between being a fox and a man. It seems he is primarily a fox who changes into a man rather than the other way arround. It also implied in one sentence he may be something else altogether primarily. When he is in human form, he acts kind of fox-like ...more |

Peter Beagle is always an excellent writer, an The Innkeeper's Song
, even if it's not as successful as his other works, is no
exception. The writing is beautiful, and the book is a small tour de force
, where every chapter is written from a different viewpoint.
The TG stuff in the book is important to the plot, but happened
long before the story starts, as I recall. (I read this book a
little while ago)

I just read this recently. It's a great book. The TG is a bit of a
spolier, however, since we find out about it having happened
half-way through the book. It was more of an illusion, apparently,
though I'm not sure if the magic actually changed the character's
body or not. He reverts to a man when he doesn't need his disguise
after it is revealed.
There is also a character that is usually a fox and also sometimes
turns himself into a man. It's unclear if he is a real fox or
something else entirely.
I met Peter Beagle at an event recently, and he told me that The
Innkeeper's Song is one of his favorites. He said it's currently
out of print, but he expects it will be back in print soon.
