Equinox Knocks
Gender | |
17 year-old teenager girl's world is pretty good: she's popular at her small town high school, she's dating the star quarterback, and her best girlfriend is a witch. But it is turned upside down when she catches her boyfriend in the arms of her arch-rival girl. She vows revenge. But it's the night ...more |

An amazingly amateurish movie, it feels 20 years old, instead of 3.
I appreciate the storyline, to a degree. It's rare to find an F2M
story, and it was marginally charming. Some parts were totally
teeth-grindingly bad, and I'm not a huge fan of TF that 'happen
overnight' but in most other regards, the social ramifications were
partly believable, even if the acting was jarringly, well,
high-school level.

Oh how I wish this was a MtF switch movie. It is not a perfect
film. Not by a long shot, but it has some great performances and
takes some risks.
The premise is about how 17 year old Allie Black gets frustrated
with the downside of being a girl. She deals with sexual
harrassment and the glass ceiling. She wants to go to the big dance
with her boyfriend and wear her new dress, but she gets banned by
the principal for, well, being a girl (you'll see).
However, Her best friend Courtney (very cute and very good actress)
is a witch who is experimenting with magic on the fall equinox.
Allie gets drunk around the ceremonial circle and starts making fun
of witchcraft. She half heartedly wishes to be a boy and when it
doesn't instantly happen she laughs it off. However, that night she
sleeps over with Courtney and transforms into a boy in the middle
of the night.
Now, here is where Equinox Knocks gets original. Allie's body
transforms (just a cut away) but in an "realistic" manner. Her
clothes remain the same, her hair remains the same, her shaved legs
remain the same, and her nail polish remains the same. So Courtney
freaks when she sees this boy in her bed, but slowly realizes what
has happened.
The other thing that's great is the "boy" Allie's performance. This
kid as never acted in a movie, he's from macho Texas, and he
totally (if not sometimes melodramatically) nails Allie's
mannerisms. I mean, this is a low budget movie and not everything
is great, but the boy (Guilford Adams) acts like a total girl.
Then the next original plot point is how Allie can't change back
until the next equinox. Which is in 9 weeks. Over those 9 weeks
Allie is forced to act like a boy. Though time isn't convayed well,
Allie starts acclimatising and becomes more male. It would have
been nice to see what would have happened if the transformation
lasted longer . . . say a year, but when Allie changes back at the
end (during a football game) she takes her Helmet off and looks and
acts like like Hillary Swank from "Boys Don't Cry." Of course, her
hair is now boy short. And oh how I wish they would have had more
scenes when she changed back, because it probably would have been a
mini-MtF transformation film, since Allie's mind has become more
masculine.
Now the movie is not without it's flaws, and there are a lot.
Pacing, acting, dialogue. However, what's good is real good. Like
taking the rist of showing a guy in panties. Or having Allie
getting an errection in the mens locker room . . . . . and the
repercussions. Allie eventually goes all the way with a girl, but
it would have been nice to see more conflict or enjoyment. There's
also a great scene where Allie as a boy is forced to get a hair
cut. It's so sad . . . sort of. Other nice touches are Allie
getting use to her new voice and experimenting with pitch over
time. And of course, at the end, keeping that low pitch as a girl.
There's even a cool subplot about how the police are looking for
girl Allie and thinking she's a missing person. There's a nice
emotional aspect to Allie being away from her family. And her
mother gives a good performance.
Definately worth a rental.
