I just saw Si j'tais elle and after weeks of anticipation and high
expectations I have to say it is one of the best TG movies I've
seen in a long time.
The thing that really makes this movie shine is the sentimentality.
The plot is a little bit like Mrs. Doubtfire meets Switch, but has
more of the bitter sweet tone of Doubtfire.
You've probably heard the plot already:
When the chauvinistic Alex angers his mistreated wife one too many
times she leaves him and takes their 2 girls. In a moment of
frustration he curses women and consequently transformed into a
one. However, Alex is able to convience his friend Nicholas that he
is now Alice, and together they plan to get his family back.
The film goes back and forth between Alice trying to get by in a
beautiful blonde's body and sharing quality moments with his family
that he could never have experienced before.
There are some nice moments where Alice, now full of estrogen,
tears up more than once at the thought of his kids. Also, Alice
babysits her daughters and unknowingly drops clues about her new
identity. The kids catch on and in a cute moment realize their
babysitter is really their "Papa!" They think it's neat that their
Dad is now a girl.
The film is also filled with the standard cliches in the TG fiction
arsenal but they seem fresh and fun when acted by Helene de
Fougerolles. There's the classic leg waxing scene, walking in
heels, forgetting to cross her legs, walking into the mens room,
and saying odd things, like "crazy women drivers!"
The thing that keeps these jokes from seeming old is how they twist
our expectations. Alice has trouble walking in heels but she never
once falls. And while she never completely learns to walk like a
lady she doesn't stomp around. Also, Alice has to keep up
appearances and that means not 1 but 2 shopping trips. The first is
reluctant but the second she kinda gets into it. Later, Alice must
help her wife with her lingerie fashion show and that means
modeling the underwear. By the end of the show she has so much fun
with it that the crowd cheers. Finally, Alice decides to use her
new looks to seduce her wife's new boyfriend, Didler. She plans a
date, wears a sexy red dress, and downs half a bottle of wine to
calm her nerves. Deciding to get it over with she jumps on Didler.
Scared at first Alice gives in and discovers that sex for a woman
isn't that bad.
Unfortunately the movie isn't perfect. Alice doesn't spend much
time exploring her body. The pacing of the film is a little too
fast, the running time could have been longer, and the ending
seemed a little rushed (plus I was hoping Alex would become Stuck)
but overall this is a very good (even without subtitles) TG film
and the pros far outweigh the cons. Si j'etais elle is a more
serious take on gender bending than I've seen from a feature film
in a long long time. When the translation comes out I can only
expect my opinion to be even higher.
