The following submission posted by 'guest' has been rejected.
Going to leave this one open to a vote - is this really a transformation? And what exactly is a "female hermaphrodite" ? Seems to me you can't be both, you're one or the other.

Will add this into the catalog if everyone thinks a transformation has occured here, but it seems as though Kei is the same person physically "before and after".

The is a manga, by Mikiyo Tsuda. It was released in Canada by DMP.

Whoa Lady Sekhmet. This is a tough one.

I think we should classify it as a transformation if the boy is actually turned into a girl by way of chemical treatments, wouldn't that be a transformation?

I'm not familiar with the story though.

From: Bieeanda , 210 months, post #3
My best guess is that the character is a genetic female who expressed male physical characteristics. Real-world intersex conditions are a lot more complicated than mythical or fantasy hermaphroditism.

The entry notes that there are 'chemical treatments' involved, which would seem to rule out simple cross-dressing. Plus, there's the implication that the character (regardless of her actual sex) was originally raised as a male.

The most important question is, does the change occur during the story arc, or is it just background? I seem to recall that the TG element of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was bounced because none of it occurred during the movie itself.

Wow, this is a toughy... I guess my vote is for including this one.

She thought she was a boy and was living that way, not knowing any better - until this event, where she discovered that she was (more) female and decided to live as one. The transformation that she made sounds more along the lines of her shifting how she views her role in society and how she sees herself... how she chooses to live her life... not so much a physical one, though to others I'm sure there would be a slight difference, especially after the "chemical treatments". *shrug*

Best I can tell from a bit of research... A hermaphrodite can be either be one gender and change, or both at the same time. But beyond that basic stuff, I was pretty much lost trying to find anything like this (description here too vague clinically).

English translations are available for Digital Manga Publishing.

Here is the blurb from the publisher:

"Kei Yoshikawa is a feisty young boy, troubled by problems at home and annoyed at school. One day after a sudden fainting spell, Kei is examined by the doctor and given shocking news - he is actually supposed to be a girl! Although physically male, Kei's chromosomes show that "he" is female. Seeing a chance to start life anew, Kei and his family arrive at the decision for him to begin living as a girl. As "Kei" disappears and "Megumi" enrolls back into school, his/her girl pal Makoto is Kei's only ally who knows his secret. However, his former male friends figure things out before long; and suddenly, "Megumi" is the object of their affections! Feeling femininely weak and vulnerable for the first time, Kei/Megumi develops an aversion for all boys. Dressed like a girl but still feeling like a boy, mixed-up Kei/Megumi feels more comfortable being with Makoto... what's a gender-confused kid supposed to do?"

I read the fan translated scanalations some time ago. Kei is intersexed in some unspecified way, but it is suggested that his external genitalia were entirely male and the fainting spell that disclosed his condition was due to the onset of menses (the reader is left to suppose that with no way to expel the menstrual blood, he becames septic). We see Kei as male, and the fainting spell happens on-page.

Kei undergoes surgical treatment (not chemical) to become anatomically female -- so I'd say that it belongs. It is a gender transformation from (apparently) male to female.

Ok, not seeing any objections so into the catalog it will go.

Kei starts out as an apparent boy, albeit undeveloped. After he faints, the examination reveals that although he has (small) external male characteristics, he is genetically female. During the family discussion, his parents talk him into surgery and to reinvent himself as female. This crisis will somehow bring the family closer together, they say.

When they return to the hospital with their decision, the doctor is a little surprised that Kei did not opt for a hormone treatment to grow up male. Kei is surprised -- he had not understood that such an option was possible. Kei tries to reverse his decision, but his parents won't let him -- they're convinced this is for the best.

There is one panel with a long-shot view of the hospital and a shout of "WAIT!" with replies that "It will be over soon." So, yes, Kei goes under the knife.

The story then jumps to a few months later when "Megumi" is a new "transfer student" entering Kei's old high school. ("Kei" and "Megumi" are two different pronunciations of the same kanji.) The plot of Megumi's adjustment really takes off from there. The introductory section is about 25 or so pages.

Megumi's friend Makoto is the doctor's daughter. This is why she knows Megumi's "secret" and has agreed to help her get used to her new life.

I'd love to see this on video sometime.

If they make the story into one that is.

That's one chilling synopsis, Mashashi.

From: guest (MrSkaoovie) , 210 months, post #10
This reminds me of something I saw in the Ed Wood movie, Glen or Glenda. There was a side story with a situation exactly like this. To be a female hermaphradite, means that she's an incompleate female in a male body. She has the reproductive organs of both genders, but the female organ is incompleate. it's a very rare condition, one that usually needs a sex change operation to solve.

Do we get to see the transformation in the comic? I don't think we should take every submission where we assume a transformation occured.

If this is a case of a boy becoming a girl by chemical transformation then I would vote to keep this in the database.
If I am incorrect or have misunderstood, then I vote no.

> That's one chilling synopsis, Mashashi.

It's actually played more for laughs than for drama the way the author tells it.

Also, curiously, the whole "closer family" thing gets dropped after the introductory pages, and the rest of the story deals exclusively is with other high-school students.

> Do we get to see the transformation in the comic?

What? Megumi's surgery??? No, we don't see her surgery. We go from Kei being an undeveloped boy with his parents at the doctor's office, to Megumi dressed in the school uniform as a rather flat-chested girl awkwardly trying to re-enter society with Makoto's help.

> If this is a case of a boy becoming a girl by chemical transformation ...

No. A genetic girl who has the external male appearance removed via surgery.

BTW, by the end of the second volume some time has passed. Megumi's natural hormones have kicked in and she does shape up as a rather cute girl. For the short time-frame of the first volume, though, Megumi looks just like Kei did, except she's wearing the school skirt instead of pants.

>> Do we get to see the transformation in the comic?
>What? Megumi's surgery??? No, we don't see her surgery.

LOL! Just figured out what you meant. Yes, the transformation occurs within the comic. For the first few pages, Kei is anatomically male, then for the rest of the story Megumi is anatomically female.

(But we never actually "see" Kei's/Megumi's anatomy, either way. Not a hentai manga.)

Thanks for the extra info uri & Masashi! :-)

From: guest (Masashi) , 210 months, post #15
Mea culpa!!!!

I remembered wrong -- Kei does NOT have surgery. Repeat: Kei does NOT have surgery.

Dug up my copy (should have done that before posting yesterday).

The introductory section is 36 pages long.
pp. 1 - 14: Kei bumming around with his four pals in the "Gang of Five" and then blacks out.
pp. 15 - 18: The doctor tells Kei and his mother that test results show Kei to be genetically a girl.
pp. 19 - 32: Kei resigning himself to the fact that after being a boy for 15 years, he will now "have to live as a girl" because there is no other option, and his parents promising that this crisis will bring them all closer together, etc.
pp. 33 - 36: Kei announces to the doctor that he will begin treatments to become a girl. The doctor is surprised he won't remain in the life he's accustomed to. Kei tries to back out, but his parents won't let him.
p. 36: Last panel has long-shot of the hospital with a shout "Damn it, I refuse to become a girl!"
Then with p. 37 the high school story starts, and we only see the mother occasionally in passing now and then.

Megumi's friend Makoto is the doctor's niece, not his daughter.

Early on there's a scene where Megumi tells Makoto that wearing a bra still creeps her out, since she has no breasts. Makoto, being "helpful," feels her from behind to see if that's true, and tells Megumi that she's just small, like many other girls.

Makoto then says:"You are receiving chemical treatments, aren't you? But in your case, it's not like you've had a sex change operation -- so it probably has something to do with your developing hormones. Don't worry, I'm sure they'll get bigger."

So the submitting poster and uri are correct, and my earlier two posts were wrong. Megumi has not had surgery to correct her external appearance. But she has begun living according to her genetic gender, and is receiving a "chemical treatment" to facilitate her "developing hormones."

I read this manga. The second chapter skips six monthes ahead from where Kei tells her doctor she decided to live as a girl. It seems the reader is supposed to accept her as being a girl.

There are some lines of Mokotos which tell about the change.

pg. 44

"It's going to cost your family enough as it is for the adjustments to your body"

This implies that she may not be completed her transformation.

pg. 46

"You are recieving chemical treatments, aren't you? But in your case, it's not like you've had a sex-change operation...So it probably has something to do with your developing hormones. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get bigger."

Again it is implied that this is an ongoing transformation, and not yet a complete one. Everyone seems to think she was changed by chemical treatments. It seems more likely that because of her current condition, she is on a few presciption drugs.

I say leave it in. There is no exact moment of transformation because the whole story is her transformation.

From: cj , 210 months, post #17
I am wondering if perhaps she doesn't need a sex-change operation. Perhaps she already posseses the proper equipment for both, though the female parts have not been fully developed. Then she could remain as is, or have her male equipment removed.

There didn't seem to be any mention of a surgery in Masashi's latest info... so it could be conceivable that the transition for her will not require any surgery. *shrug*

Still, there is a character, if not physical, transformation from male to female... or seems to be - my opinion is also to leave this entry in the database.
