This is the original series of The Avengers form the 70's ; I' m not sure : Steve Engleheart did the story , and Jim Starlin with Dave Cockrum did the art . This book was true Marvel magic .

In Memoriam ; Sunday November 26 , 2006 David Earl Cockrum passed away after a decade long struggle of living with diabetes . He's being credited as one of the major creative forces at Marvel Comics during the 1970's .
The one time art-director is one of the reasons why we have the new X-Men . Big Dave said that Wolverine wasn't his favorite , but he was the reason Wolvie got the claws . Nightcrawler was .

cockrum created nightcrawler for DC's legion of superheroes, but they rejected the character. So when cockrum got the xmen gig he put the character in that group!

and the Space Phantom was the villain in the "Beyond" series that just finished up from marvel!

That's right ! Infact ; Chris Claremont said that Gladiator was his own take on Superman . I just pulled 107 of the X-Men and I see why he said so . . .

It wasn't just Gladiator. The whole Imperial Guard, the group the X-Men fought in # 107, was based on the Legion Of Super-Heroes.

Yeah, one thing I'm proud of my vast encyclopedic knowledge of comic book trivia. :-)
