When I look back at Mr. Queen, I can't help but feel pretty let down. The show, about a modern guy who's a cook getting transported into a Joseon queen's body, was this wild mix of genres – thriller, romance, comedy.

It's wild to think it's the 11th highest-rated drama in Korean TV history, with its last episode pulling in a massive 17.371% rating and over 4 million viewers – crazy numbers for a show where MTF gender-bend romance was such a big deal.

At first, there wasn't really any spark between the now-MTF Queen and the King of the time period, but that definitely changed as things went on.

I honestly have no idea what I would have done if Lalola didn't exist. I actually discovered this forum because of my disappointment with Mr Queen and trying to find anything remotely similar which led to ne Lalola and thank God for that.

This drama is a remake of Chinese drama Go Princess Go which have a more ambiguous ending. Or rather "endings" (there were 2 alternate endings made by the production on top of the original ending IIRC).

It's so long ago so I don't remember the exact details but IIRC none of the endings has the MTF Empress and Emperor live happily ever after in the past. 1 of the 3 endings did come close to that, in that it has the Empress came back to the present still in her female form, together with the Emperor. Presumably they have their happily ever after in the present? But the way it was made was more of a spoof or parody way, so I don't know if that should be considered a real ending or just some fun extra clip the production made to calm fans who were not satisfied with the first two endings.

The drama Go Princess Go is an adaptation of a novel. Interestingly, in the book the MTF Empress and the Emperor did live happily ever after in the past. But I personally was not feeling satisfied by that story. In that version the modern playboy & the Empress were supposedly born in each other's body since the beginning (as in, the modern playboy's soul were supposed to be born in the past in the body of the Empress while the Empress's soul was supposed to be born in the playboy's body in the present day) but some glitches causing them to be born in the wrong body. So the heaven's officials switched them back to their original body & era to make things right.

I don't like this kind of settings because the reason I read/watch MTF stories is because I want to see a real man being forced to become a woman and slowly adapt and finally accept her womanhood & live as a woman forever. If the setting of the story is just "he was supposed to be born a girl from the start" then for me it takes away the interesting bit.

Yes I agree with you on your last para. Also, maybe I'm wrong but I feel like that the Lalola franchise pretty much ended up the peak culmination of all MTF genderbend romance live action media before it. Still can't belive it was Argentina of all countries to do this genre the justice that it's deserved as it pretty much gave us everything a genderbend romance could have like the countless arcs about becoming the opposite gender, the way society will treat you now, how you might start falling in love and being attracted to men and of courseClick to show spoiler

Also, what I hate more than anything when genderbend stuff is involved are body swap stories which are always about a couple or future couple realising that they love each other anyways and they change back to their original bodies in the end.

I still hate how the American version of Lalola wasn't picked up after the un aired pilot because the producers were too worried that the genderbent MC falling in love with a man would prove too much for American audiences in 2009. There was also a show called Drop Dead Dave about a male lawyer coming back as a female lawyer which would have dealt with the same themes including romance with a man but that show got canned and didn't even get a pilot for more less the same reasons for the American Lalola in 2021 or 2022. Safe to say, we won't be getting a genderbend MTF romance from Hollywood for the foreseeable future.
