I realize the answer can be variable, but I’m curious if anybody
can provide a range of success or struggle stories.

I think it really depends on the genre. You'll never really know
unless an author posts their finances
I won't say my pen name since I don't want publicity but this is
how much I made last month off page reads and sales:

Won't say what I do differently because I don't want extra
publicity, except if you look at all the body transformation,
possession, swap authors that have good ratings or high sales
rankings, they are generally good benchmarks. The ones that have
fewer than 40 releases probably aren't worth your time.

Thank you, that’s a helpful data point on the “success” end of the
scale. I’m sure a lot of the content is either a) poorly written,
b) poorly marketed, or has c) little name exposure, so most authors
don’t enjoy that kind of success. So, well done you!

I've personally a done lot research on people in my competing niche
but have noticed that that some things are universal. I don't do
any marketing what so ever - I rely solely on word of mouth and
Kindle Unlimited's passive marketing/advertising.
If you have an author who posts a lot of 10-20 page stories with
more than 4 stars as their average review, they're probably in the
$1k-$1.5k range.
If you have an author who has 4+ stars who consistently have 50+
page stories, they're closer to what I'm making.
If you have an author that has very low ratings (or no ratings) who
makes 10-20 page stories, they're not making any money.
This is all assuming that you post a minimum of once per week. If
you post less than once per week, you're probably making close to
nothing. You can probably make a few hundred per month if you're
one of the authors with lots of good ratings and longer works. If
you're a high rating author with a lower page count and you don't
post frequently, you'll also be in the low hundred range.
