In the recent arc, Natsu and a more recent character, Suzuki are
fighting an Earth Dragon God. Problem is, he is invulnerable.
Selene, another recent character, recent enemy said they could stop
this by seeking out orbs granting the Earth God his power. While
Natsu and Suzuki hold him off, the rest of the team scatters to
disable this invulnerability.
Last chapter, Gray encountered a new foe named Sai, unrelated to
the current conflict. Holding one of these orbs, Gray explains the
situation but Sai, not being a mage but an alchemist says he needs
it for his alchemy guild as they need materials for their practice.
Gray having no choice, gets ready to fight. Sai however commits a
move called transmuate, turning Gray into Juvia directly on the
spot clothes and all..
Gray suddenly notices his voice, new equipment, and panics. The
technquie also had the side effect of, not turning Gray into Juvia,
but also, turning Juvia into Gray. Miles away back on a ship, the
whole guild freaks out at Gray suddenly appearing out of nowhere.
Juvia, suffers a Gray induced overload and faints.
Its a simple poof, the technique is based on turning people into
others based on either love or rivalry. Sai used love bond on Gray,
but he believes Rival bond is useless as it could only alter
someone to become someone else as strong, meaning Gray could have
become either Natsu or Erza.
Chapter ends with Gray still in Juvias body. Wouldnt expect much in
the current situation as this came out of left field with a current
end arc battle going on, but this new character is a setup for
another plot involving the gold dragon and a whole guild of
alchemists. He could linger around and potentially cause more swaps
with others.
Interestingly, this is the 3rd time Fairy Tail did a body swap with
Ep 19 filler and Wendy-Irene near the end of the original. This is
however only the second in the manga and overall second time Gray
swapped with a girl, first being Lucy. Juvia wasn't around yet back
in ep 19.
