I have a serious mental illness, and whenever I try to write, I get a depression and panic attack, and instantly I get depressed and can't write.

If I take antipsychotics, I'll be lazy, it won't work and those drugs are expensive

Honestly, take a break from writing. Depression is a serious illness. Your own well being is more important than any story you write.

If you are reluctant to to take antipsycotics, may I recommend therapy?

Learning how to meditate could be an option. Some people spend 1 or 2 hours a day meditating and it changes their lives. I haven't tried it myself but Osho's book on meditation are good.

What about the setting where you write? Sometimes writing can make you evaluate it as your life especially if it's a setting where you're at home. I wonder if you write like in a library, or at the park where others are that you think of your writing as more of a job then a self-evaluation. Otherwise, don't worry about writing, if it impacts one's mental health that much the activity isn't worth it.

Sometimes when I feel depressed I take a quick sniff from dirty, disgusting, and smelly diapers. Never fails to cheer me up. :)

go exercise....best thing I ever did for my depression/anxiety was add daily working out

Obviously it's unlikely any of us here are qualified to give real advice on this but how I handle when I'm low is to write how I'm feeling to get it out of my head. Then the next day I read it back and try to almost 3rd person myself and think up solutions to the issues current weighing me down.
