I doubt the writers ever thought about it, but I think the fans have given the sort of explanation that the aura of the person is around Sam, and people just see the aura(though, it was established that small children and cats would see Sam as himself, and would also be able to see Al). It's been a long time since I watched it, and I didn't see every episode, but I don't think they ever really made the fact that Sam is physically leaping into a plot point in the show(other than maybe the previously mentioned double amputee leap, and the mention of him gaining a daughter with the wife of someone he leaped into).

I know one of the tie-in comics did use that as a plot point, where Sam had leaped into a teen girl who was a twin, and the girl's mother tripped on the stairs and would have died, but Sam was able to catch her, and Al commented that in the original history the girl wasn't strong enough to catch the mother, but since Sam was much stronger he was able to save her.

However, some of the tie-in books were written as if Sam wasn't physically leaping, and it was just his mind(though, I haven't read all of them, as I haven't found them online), and I know in The Wall where Sam leaps first into a six year old girl, and then the woman the girl grew up to be the book does make comments about him being in the body of a small girl, and then later a woman. But, I go with the viewpoint of that if it's onscreen it's canon.

The show's stance on whether Sam's body or mind leaped evolved throughout the series, and I believe it was actually decided fairly late in the series that it was his body that leaped, and people are only perceiving him to be the person he has leaped into. Some of the novels, I believe, were written before that was made clear, and so reflect an assumption that it's Sam's mind leaping into his leapees' bodies. There are episodes where he's able to see despite leaping into a blind man and where he's able to walk despite leaping into a double amputee, and the leapee gives birth in the waiting room in the episode where he leaps into a pregnant woman, so it's unquestionably his body that leaps. A lot of fanfiction assumes that Sam is mentally leaping, though, so the audience, at least, is divided on the issue.

As for how physical leaping works, as someone who's written Quantum Leap-inspired fiction. I can say that it's best not to think about it too hard, lol. The quick answer though, is that people see, hear, and feel Sam (and, by extension, Ben) as the person he's leaped into, and it works because the writers said so.

The creators have stated in interviews that there's no waiting room in the new series, I suppose because they decided it would complicate things too much. Everyone seems to agree that the balance between Ben's side of things and the Project side of things is kind of janky as it is, so it's probably the right decision not to add the waiting room to the mix. This is a new team restarting the project 30 years later and rebuilding a great deal of the technology to make it happen, so it's not surprising that leaping would work a little differently.

The ratings apparently increased this week. The first week it had 3.5 million viewers and a 0.5 rating; the second week it had 2.8 million viewers and a 0.3 rating; the third week it had 2.6 million viewers and a 0.4 rating. I don't understand ratings well enough to understand how it can have fewer viewers but a higher rating, but the articles I'm seeing take this to be good news. TV Fanatic says this: "If the show can stabilize here, there's a good chance it will get a backorder." I assume this means the network would order additional episodes for the back half of the season, increasing it to the standard 22ish episodes of a full season. This is something that frequently happens with new series, and I know it was part of the deal for Quantum Leap.

In any case, the fact that the drop in viewers wasn't significant between the second and third episodes seems like a good sign. The pilot wasn't great; that's likely because it wasn't originally meant to be the pilot; the episode that was originally meant to be the pilot was moved to be the sixth episode, and another script was reworked to be the pilot. I haven't had a chance to watch the third episode yet, but the second episode felt much better. The steep drop in viewers between the first and second episodes probably reflects the mediocre pilot, but the fact that most viewers who watched the second episode stuck around for the third means that most people probably liked what they saw in the second episode, and hopefully those viewers will mostly stick with the show.

Something to keep in mind, if you're reading coverage of the show, is that there are some sites out there that like to write doom-and-gloom articles about movies and shows that they perceive to be too "woke." I've lost track of how many articles I've read over the last few years predicting the imminent demise of Star Wars or the MCU. Those sites stir outrage and despair to get clicks. Take everything you read with a grain of salt. The new Quantum Leap is no runaway hit, but the situation is probably not as dire as some sites suggest.

If you want this series to continue, make sure you're watching it legally if at all possible! Live TV is probably the best option; you can also (depending on where you live, I imagine) watch it on Peacock. Of course, not everyone has access to these options, so do what you have to do. But if you can, watch the show legally so it can keep going!

(Not to mention the fact that, just like a lot of YouTube creators, if the showrunners see that there's a weird uptick in viewers every time Ben leaps into a woman, they may be incentivized to make it happen more often, lol.)

And don't forget that tonight's new episode airs in just a few hours---and it's supposed to be the one where he leaps into a female bounty hunter.

Only because they ordered 6 more episodes doesnt change the fact that the ratings suck.

From: guest , 18 months, post #91
For our sake, the only reason to care about ratings is that they'll help determine whether or not the show continues, so the fact that they've extended the series seems like a good sign. *shrugs*
