What is the difference between male and female names

What is the difference between male and female names

From: Moose , 46 months, post #2
when it comes down to it, nothing at all, you can technically have any label that you want, society just has expectations that certain things are for men and certain things are for women, but as we move forward things are starting to change

If a man named Jack becomes a woman, what is the most reasonable name for this woman?

From: Moose , 46 months, post #4
Whatever they choose

From: vup , 46 months, post #5
Yeah, technically Moose is correct. But, if you're wondering what the equivalents would be in English, Jack typically becomes Jaqueline or Jackie. Jack is a variant of John so the female version of that would be Jean or Joanna.

From: vup , 46 months, post #6
Sorry, I meant Joan or Joanna. Jean is the English female version of the French female Jeanne, itself being the counterpart to the French male Jean.

The corresponding name has a big problem, not every name has a way to correspond, such as abcde

From: guest (Stag) , 46 months, post #8
In the US, a lot of female names end in a vowel (a,e,i,o,u, y). Not sure why but ive noticed it as ive grown older. Some names are dual...like Alex or Jamie andndont necessarily correspond

From: vup , 46 months, post #9
While it's true that not every name has a corresponding opposite gender version, that doesn't mean that none do. Jack and John do in fact. But again, like Moose said, a person is free to pick something unrelated if they change gender.

And sometimes it just comes down to changing the last letter to make a name more feminine. Many male and female names have a proper name, and then a short or nickname, like the John/Jack, or the Richard/Rich/Dick type of name. Richard does not have a direct female name, but there are names like Rikki or Ricarda. There are some that are very different when you go down the short or nick names, like Michael/Mike/Mikey vs. Michelle/Shelly and many different variations on that. Then there are some female names that don't have a direct male name variation, like Karen or Heidi. And then it gets even more fun when you start trying to work through the origin of the name, and what country a person is in, from, or what they are changing it to. Look at SAM the movie, he is Sam (likely short for Samuel) and then the female version Sam is going by Samantha. Sex Trip has Eddie going by Edna, which are both likely British or Welsh? I have also seen things like Billi as a female name, and then you have Blake Lively (female) or Blake Shelton (male) both using a male name. Christopher/Chris vs. Christina/Chris/Tina or the hundreds of variations.

I have an aunt whose name is Johnnie. Go figure.

I don't want to sound like a prude here, but If Jack wants to be female its really quite obvious its either Jacklyn or Jackie. Makes sense, right?
