TL;DR: If you like my interactive story "The Book of Masks"—about a
high school student who uses a magical grimoire to create disguises
that can mimic anyone—but hate WdC's "Servers Busy" message, try
this link:
https://www.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/2183315-The-Book-of-Masks-Archives
Longer version: Okay, if you know writing.com (WdC) you know it
likes to surround its interactive stories with an "Interactives Not
Available" roadblock. For awhile now I've been trying to figure out
a way to help readers dodge it, and I think I've got a workable
system in place now: Going forward, I aim to post chapters *both*
in the original interactive and in a new non-interactive item, "The
Book of Masks: Archives":
https://www.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/2183315-The-Book-of-Masks-Archives
That new item will be organized like an interactive and it will
collect the same new chapters as they are added to the interactive,
but it is NOT technically an interactive and so it shouldn't set
off WdC's "Servers Busy" alarms. In addition to the new chapters, I
will also be slowly migrating some of the old chapters over into
it.
And yes, I know, it's still WdC, but I haven't found any
alternative sites that would be worth the hassle of migrating 3000+
chapters.
Oh, and if you're curious about this interactive (that I'm so
shamelessly promoting) but are frightened of a 3K-chapter behemoth,
I've compiled an anthology of selected chapters and storylines as a
curated introduction:
https://www.writing.com/main/books/item_id/2183353-The-Book-of-Masks-Abridged
It's 97 chapters pre-selected to give new readers a look at key
characters, plot devices, magical apparatus, and the overall style
and atmosphere of the interactive. You can check it out if you're
nervous about plunging into a ginormous maze of storylines.
I've also created a hub for updates and resources related to BoM:
https://www.writing.com/main/books/item_id/2156493-The-Book-of-Masks-Homepage
The original interactive will continue, running parallel with the

That's much appreciated---I read many chapters a while ago, but the
site made it basically impossible to keep up nowadays.

Good Job Seuzz as always...
I've been reading your works in both interactive, archive, and
static format and it is always great.
Keep up the good work and have a really nice day.

I feel this thread deserves a bump.
Seuzz, and many of the other incredible co-authors still regularly
contribute to this amazing story. It’s getting close to 4,000
chapters, all of which are high quality. The story has everything
from body swaps, disguises, shapeshifters, and all sorts of other
TF shenanigans. IMO It’s a masterpiece of TF fiction, and is worth
being checked out.
As Seuzz mentions in his above post, he still maintains a public
archive which allows anyone to get around the awful writing.com
paywal and reading limit.

I don't usually hype my own stuff. But after a months-long hiatus,
I am back writing and posting chapters in "Book of Masks," and I
wanted to let anyone who had despaired of new BoM chapters know
that I'm back.

Hi Seuzz! I figured this is a chance to contact you, do you take
commissions for specific storylines in BOM and Student Bodies?
Always wanted to contribute to those CYOA stories but I never had
the time myself to write my ideas.

Hi! Yes I do take commissions. You can email me through the WdC
email system, if you don't feel like pitching an idea in public
here. ;)

@Tal, post #6
I’ve heard of this story before and tried to read it but couldn’t
get anywhere because of writing.com’s traffic thing so I gave up.
Now though, gonna give it another shot! I like MtF, FtF, and
Shapeshifting. You mentioned this has Shapeshifting so any Chapters
I should check out in specific to see it?

Been reading BOM past few days. Very very nice Seuzz. Since your
back please keep updating this, I’ve seen a lot of other similar
creators return after hiatus and burn out fast. Cheers

Use this website to view writing.com stories without the paywall:
https://ackater.github.io/writing.com-archival
Personally my favorites are Will joining Stellae
Alternatively you can just search "Shapeshifter"

@Ym
It figures that RL got in the way the day you posted your note, and
I missed a day. But I'm back on schedule, I hope.
Just a reminder that there is a central hub--
https://www.writing.com/main/books/item_id/2156493-The-Book-of-Masks-Homepage
--where it's possible to sort of keep up with goings-on in the
story, my schedule, what storylines are coming next, etc. There's
even a message board associated with BoM and related interactives,
if you want to see what others have had to say or suggest about the
story:

@Mirage,
In regards to the shapeshifting, if you haven't already found them,
here are the ones I can remember.
These ones exist as short fictional stories written within the
universe that Will comes across:
Le Cameleon et Le Corbeau (1) (and part 2)
Lovers and Liars (1) (and part 2/3)
The Replacement Killers (1) (and part 2/3)
The Things That You Find on the Internet
The Surfer

Just giving a polite bump to this amazing story. In fact, Seuzz is
currently running a story where everyone can help influence its
direction through an ongoing poll every other day. Check out the
“Book of Masks — Homepage” linked above!

Book of masks should move to CHYOA imo, it's really hard to access
in writing.com

Yeah, how dare people who have written the equivalent of 40 books’
worth of great content not do it for you for free!
Writing.com GPs are paltry income and support but at least they
aren’t the huge kick in the face you want to give authors.

There is already a backup of writing.com with data pretty all the
data pretty much organized up to 2023 December, the archive is
constantly updated.
https://ackater.github.io/writing.com-archival
It shouldn't be hard to migrate all those stories to CHYOA or other
similar site, as long as you could talk to admin to bulk upload
them on the site. By my calculations writing.com has about 3
million stories chapter, its total size about 4GB (maybe less),
pretty much nothing on today's internet, it's literally just text.
There could be some issue with "copyright", but to hell with it.
Nobody is making any money writing or reading this stuff anyway. So
they really should go for it.
At this point writing.com owner has pretty much has been keeping
those stories hostages. And he is 100% totally bullshitng its users
with "Due to resource limitations", horseshit. It's 2024, it's
literally just text. You are just greedy.

Seuzz should write a book with a selection of the BoM plots and
sell it on line. I will be the first one to purchase it!
