Transformation into a swarm
From: guest (clancy688) , 68 months, post #1
Hi,

I'm interested in transformations into swarms - i.e. one person becoming a swarm of many tiny beings.

A perfect example for this would be the shapeshifter specialization in the Dragon Age game series which can transform into a swarm: http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Flying_Swarm

Other examples:

Do you know any more stories etc about this specific shapeshift trope? :)

Not really stories about this, but in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, there were two types of shapeshifter. The Soultaken, which had basically one other form, and the D'ivers which had multiple bodies. It's been a while since I read the books, but I don't recall any of the major characters being D'ivers, but a few of them were Soultaken I think.

I can't think of any prose stories, but I've seen this a lot in movies and TV. In the Doctor Who episode Partners in Crime people would transform into piles of Adipose, these little baby alien guys. In the movie version of Constantine there was a bad guy made of a swarm of bugs, IIRC. I don't remember if he was always bugs or if he could form into a human shape and then break up into a swarm. There was also an episode of Buffy, What's My Line, with a bad guy who could turn into a mass of worms and wriggle under doors. I've seen things where individual vampires can turn into swarms of bats. There are a few examples listed here: http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/Bat_Swarming

Oh! Check out this page: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWormThatwalks. Lots of examples of what you're looking for.

In the Wild Card series a character named Hive is introduced who can turn into a swarm of Wasps. This is the American Heroes trilogy and it's now a few years old.

I have that sort of transformation featured as an aspect of a sequence I did a few months ago:

I mean, it's a swarm of bats, but still a swarm. Does that count?
