The name of the comic is My Flesh is Cool
And a quick google search shows no site featuring the comics to be
read.
Someone should buy the 4 issues and scan them for archival purposes

I have the series, it wasn't all that good, mediocre B&W
artwork and the plot was kind of all over the place.
Also, guest in post #3, why don't you buy them instead of being a
leech? You can buy each of the 3 issues on https://www.comcav.net/
for like $5 each.

I was just stating the fact that the comic can be purchased too.

It annoys me to no end when people "Share" books, or music, or
movies, with everyone.
Sure, big movie studios can afford to lose 30,000 views of a movie.
A writer that took years to write a novel, you are stealing from
him, you are stealing money from his pocket
would it be okay if you went to work for a pay period and found out
that all your fellow employees got to share your paycheck and you
got nothing? Is that okay?
Support the work that is done by paying the price of the item you
want to read, watch, or listen to, because people worked on it and
if you find it entertaining then maybe you should show your
appreciation for it by paying them
sorry for distracting from the thread, it's just an annoyance to me
and I feel that most of you all probably feel the same way. I know
the rules of this site reflect that view point

meh. I think if people are generally willing to pay for
entertainment they do so, if not they'll accept it free or not at
all. Obviously price of entertainment (and everything else) is
subjective, a balance between the value the creator puts on the
product and the value a consumer is willing to pay.
I certainly didn't spend as much on entertainment before streaming
services like Netflix/Spotify/Steam came along with more
"reasonable" prices. Prior to that, games in particular were being
priced upwards of $70, there was no way I was ever paying that.
IMHO the whole anti-piracy thing is overblown, I don't believe any
individual or organization is really losing any serious money on IP
piracy. The stats are inflated by the companies that have made a
multi-million industry out of selling digital rights management
solutions to content providers. Just my two cents. annnnd back to
the thread...

I know a writer that has put out two books, he works a full time
job and writes on the side
He found a web site that had his books posted for free. His books
had been downloaded from that site 100,000+ times. He told me, "if
I had that money, that $2/book, I could write full time and be with
my family more."
Pirates steal time when they steal money
sure Marvel and the associated studios don't notice a 100k
downloads of their movies, but the guy that is trying to save money
to put his kids through college, trying to make a better life is
being robbed.
Those sites that post books, that post videos, those places need to
be targetted and taken down and the operators need to see jail
time. I know that is not going to happen but it needs to happen.

From: guest (AltF4)
, 69 months, post #13 |
@Gypsy I'll be the devil's advocate and ask you this, of those 100k
people that have downloaded it, how many would have bought it?
The "patreon" business model in these indie cases is a much better
fit than just charging upfront, IMHO. Those who appreciate your
work would pay for bonus content (early access, requests, etc...)
while you publish the core of your work for free. You get a steady
stream of cash while getting more visibility.
|
From: guest (Gypsy)
, 69 months, post #14 |
I asked him the same question, how many would have bought it, and
he said that he thought probably 70% which would have been far more
then enough to make him a full time writer.
I asked if 40% would have done it, and he said that it would have
made a great difference in his life, his children's lives, and his
wife's.
Most writers that publish through Amazon are making about 35% of
cover price. Not much considering how much time it takes to write a
book.
So, I am looking for an artist for my book. Is that what I should
tell the artist? I won't pay because it will get you more
visibility?
|
From: rugal
, 69 months, post #15 |
70% is being awfully generous I think. At the same time, how many
people who pirated his work then went on to buy it? You'd also have
to factor in stuff that's completely subjective i.e. if he lost
sales maybe the people who pirated didn't find the material
interesting enough to then throw money at him for more stuff. What
was the content of his books? It might be that they're simply the
types of books that some people might not want on their purchase
history. Maybe some of those people would like to read but don't
have the extra income to spend on books (and trust me, you can
argue that it's only a few bucks but I've lived in plenty of
situations where a few bucks was my dinner for the night and I've
been down to my last $20 by payday).
There's a whole litany of reasons.
The fact is that, in my opinion and based on everything I've seen,
the entire "piracy hurts everyone" argument bunk. There's been
plenty of studies about the effects of piracy that are counter to
the narrative. Album sales have decreased with music but that's
because purchasing methods have moved away from albums to singles
and a la carte purchasing of songs; at the same time with the rise
of piracy artists have seen an increase in ticket sales for
concerts and tours and some artists like Ed Sheeran directly
attribute their rise to stardom to piracy.
Likewise there's the EU study that the EU sat on and hid for a few
years because it was commissioned to show the negative effect
piracy had on video game sales and in fact came away with the
opposite conclusion: that it helped. Just to use an anecdotal
example, on 4chan's /co/ board a few years back someone storytimed
(i.e. posted page by page) an indie comic called Underground that
the board enjoyed. The book's artist came in and said he was glad
people liked the book and said, in a nice way, that it's cool
they're spreading awareness of the book and if they like it to
please buy a copy of it too. Sales spiked for the book and the
artist earned a lot of loyalty from /co/ for being a cool guy which
led to better than expected sales on his next comic -- Superior
Foes of Spider-Man -- which led to get getting extended past it's
original 12 issues.
There's also the success of various streaming services and binge
watching which in part likely comes from torrenting shows and such
because people want things now, especially nowadays. Crunchyroll,
the largest anime streaming site, started as a piracy site before
companies saw a benefit in the streaming model, partnering with
them and them going legit. Look also at the success of "pay what
you want" models for things like albums.
That's not to say that piracy is perfect and that everyone is just
clamoring to buy everything. It's not a guarantee of course that
piracy will always lead to an increase in sales but at the same
time the world, especially of content delivery, is an entirely
different place than it was even 5 years ago, much less 15 or 20
when all of the old anti-piracy arguments were first popping up. I
understand the effect that every pirate is a lost sale and wanting
the maximum amount of money you'd feel you'd have gotten.
At the same time, however, content creators need to realize that
things have indeed changed which means exploring new ways to
generate revenue and of getting your product out there. Piracy can
be just as much of a tool if you know how to use it to your
advantage. Want people to get into your work? Maybe try offering an
older work for free so people can get an idea of what you're about
which then makes it easier to decide if that's something they want
to support going forward. The Pateron model (as AltF4 mentioned) is
another option to try. Things are changing rapidly in regards to
how content is delivered and how people consume that content which
is going to require people to think outside of the box to generate
revenue with their works and not just clinging on to old methods.

rugal, can you send me 10% of your paycheck?
consider it piracy, you don't seem to mind
I have lived where $20 is a lot of money, you know what I didn't
do? I didn't read. I didn't do anything but work. I got out of that
position. I never settled into a life where I was so stressed that
I could not afford $3 for anything, and if I felt stressed. I did
not buy it, I put it on a list and bought it later.
Piracy might not be a big deal to the big studios or you, but it is
to the small writers, the indy movie makers, movie makers like
James who keep us entertained...
Why not ask James how he feels about someone pirating his stuff?
Seriously, do you run a piracy site? Is that why you wrote so much
on it because you would lose advertisers or whatever? Feel like I
might be pirating from you by speaking up against it? Ironic isn't
it?
Seriously, if Piracy is no big deal then why does this site and
others like it have rules against it?

And I'm not meaning to be condescending or dismissive of any
concerns so apologies if it comes off like that. Over the last
couple of months though the idea of how works are distributed and
whatnot is something I've been giving a lot of thought to. There's
stuff I want to do but to me in order to do it would require having
to think of a proper way to distribute it that works in the context
of the times we're now living in (i.e. all digital, binge culture
leading to people wanting things now, etc.), much as I might prefer
say having physical copies of books, games or comics.
Seeing the way comics are largely still distributed is something
that's started giving me fits though in how completely outdated it
is and how it keeps people away from the product.
|
From: rugal
, 69 months, post #18 |
I actually would like to see James to chime in because I think he'd
definitely offer an interesting perspective. He has movies he's
sold physically (and digitally? I can't remember if Hit Girl and
Identity Theft were ever digital) but at the same time he's built
up his name via free content on Youtube. That, of course, has its
own ways of making money (i.e. monetization, much as Youtube might
be screwing with that nowadays) but James' videos like the Wand of
Change, Magic Remote, Frenemies and whatnot are what built him an
audience that he was then, hopefully, able to translate into sales
for his bigger projects.
In that sense he can be considered something of an early adopter of
the mindset I mentioned of taking advantage of emerging ways to
deliver content and thinking outside of the box as he started this
when the concept of dedicated Youtube content was incredibly new.

I am not pissed at you, I am just annoyed at the "sharing" thing
that is going on
like I have said, I have a book coming out. I know authors and I
see how they are being pirated and I think about how hard and long
I have worked on these books and I am thinking- "this sells and it
will change my life."
"It doesn't sell and I am still a published author"
"but it sells and 30k copies go off to pirates that is 30k of my
money. I can be okay with that if it sells 300k copies. It's money
I don't have now and someone liked it enough to steal it, still I
worked on that, I sacrificed time with my family for that. How can
they justify taking that from me."
"Still, if its crap and it doesn't sell... what am I out?"
can I be okay with the theft? I will have to be, because thieves
don't pay for shit, they just take and take until they are caught,
then they beg and cry and plead innocence and blah, blah, blah
pay for what you want, be honest in life, seriously
when it comes to donating to sites that make content you like, do
you do it? Do you support your favorite webcomic?
