Actually, the is not first time this creature has appeared. In Paper Mario, creatures like dupliss were in chapter 7. One also appeared in the dojo in the beginning of the game.

I found the technical name is "Duplighosts"

Duplighosts and the dojo are in the first Paper Mario.
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door is the second game in the series, and the only character so far that I have seen with the ability to change shape is Dupliss or it's first name ????.

right, i said that duplighosts are from paper mario. dupliss is a duplighost

Yep. Actually a certain friend of mine has never played the original Paper Mario, just Thousand Year Door, so when he was watching me do A Star Spirit On Ice, he called all of the duplighosts "Dupliss's".
