Could one change their gender but pretend they didn't like it?
From: DB Cooper , 78 months, post #1
In a previous thread I asked if you could picture a situation, short of physically forcing someone, where a cisgender man would have to permanently live as a woman. No one could think of a believable scenario. So here's my second question: could a man start living as a woman while convincing his friends and family he had no choice? Could he come up with a cover story to make everyone thing the gender change was not his idea?

  • The doctor said I have to take massive doses of estrogen.
  • I'm hiding from my creditors. I don't think they'll see through this disguise.
  • I'm in love with a lesbian.
  • I could only find work in my field as a female.

I know it's absurd, but can you picture any believable cover story that people would think you're presenting as female for reasons other than you really want to? I'm, um, asking for a friend...

short answer: no
Long answer: you can come out when you're ready

Someone once claimed Propecia turned them into a woman. I'm pretty sure it was just a cover story for someone who didn't want to admit that they were transgender, or maybe it was a fetishist living out a fantasy. The story made the rounds in some tabloids, but I don't think anyone believed this person's story.

Propecia, for the record, can cause sexual dysfunction and mild gynecomastia, but it can't make someone want to be a woman. And just because you develop gynecomastia, it doesn't mean you have to continue transitioning.

I can't think of any story someone could come up with that people would believe. The least unrealistic one is probably the first one; there are men who are prescribed estrogen for certain conditions. But no cis male who was prescribed estrogen would actually transition; he would just have to deal with some feminization. The moment he started dressing as a woman, people would assume he was either a crossdresser or trans.

These are fun premises for stories; I don't think they would work in real life.

There's nothing stopping anyone pretending they didn't like the situation as described.

As for anyone believing them on the other hand ...

Well, there's the movie Tootsie for a quasi-realistic cross dressing version of this scenario. But yeah, considering how hard actual transitioning is, any "Guess I'm a woman now-- but I'm really upset about it, honest!" scenario is pretty unlikely. Didn't stop the creation of a kajillion forced feminization stories, though.

Yes, you're all probably right. I remember the Propecia incident. The guy was claiming the drug did things no drug can do, like remove his beard and change his voice. Oh well, back to the old drawing board :)
