When I attempted to go check recently posted episodes of the
Unending BEArchive Addventure, located at
bearchive.com/~addventure/, I was redirected to a subscription
page. I know that the archive proper is a pay site, but the
Addventure has always been free. I am hoping this is just a
temporary oversight on the part of the site's proprietors, because
there were literally tens of thousands of chapters there that, to
my knowledge, are not archived anywhere else.

I dug up an old forum account I had on the site and found this
thread:
http://forum.bearchive.com/index.php?topic=9996576.msg10399630#msg10399630
It appears that this was, indeed, unintentional on the part of the
site's owner, and should be fixed soon.

Thanks! I nearly lost it.

I sort of wish it were paywalled. I’ve spent too much of my life
reading and writing chapters over maybe 18 years...

Still getting the paywall. Maybe it’s just as well.

...but there’s an option to sign up for a free account and I’m
guessing that one of those would allow access to the Addventure...

From the looks of this thread:
http://forum.bearchive.com/index.php?topic=9996577.30
Access to the Addventure is still free but now requires
registration. Which sucks, since I don't think most users of the
Addventure ever really used the rest of the BEArchive. If they keep
that requirement, I think it would kill the Addventure basically.
So that thread might be a good place to express your opinions on
such a change...

Whelp, it was fun while it lasted. The login barrier has probably
struck the killing blow. Lack of readers will end the writers.
|

And it seems like their user registration is broken, not receiving
a registration confirmation email.

I'm honestly tempted to download the entire bearchive.com story
database before it's gone forever. Paywall is usually the first
sign of killing something.
Bearchive put it behind a "free login" screen to drive away lurkers
and free submitters while looking innocuous, next step is to put it
behind a pay feature or kick Adama to the curb claiming that the
site doesn't generate enough traffic and/or funds, it's quite
unfortunate.

Number of recent episodes has dropped sharply.

From: guest (guest)

Of course it has, people want to post stories anonymously and/or
easily. Having to register an account for a site will drive those
people away.

Someone please backup the addventure before it gets killed. We are
gonna have to reconstitute on a new site. Maybe talk to the folks
at CHYOA?

Yeah this sucks. I have stopped posting archives for now. It would
be a shame if this goes behind a paywall. I may consider other
methods to distribute archives of things, perhaps as a download
(would have to make it easy to use and learn probably html).
Archiving be addventure might be doable as well.

Hit this Bonkers. I do hope this problem well be corrected in do
time. Now I'm just a lurker to just read the forum and not writing
in the addventure as a free member. Can't use the login in do
having a problem with my e-mail. so I have to just sit and wait on
the side lines till then. Oh well what is; is. Just fix the problem

For some reason it doesn't seem to be registering new accounts,
when I kept trying it didn't send an email or record the name I
used when I tried again.

Bearchive, fiction branches, random lost stories on writing.com.
It really is a shame that there isn't a better way to back all this
content up.

Whelp, I probably went there for over 10 years but that's over.
Registration is a no go, so thanks for the memories Addventure.

Here's not he only place people are talking about abandoning the
adventure, I have Adama's email address and I've sent him a note
suggesting he get them out of that membership requirement or he
consider moving the adventure elsewhere.
Not sure where it can go though, either merged as a thread of
Fiction Branches or thrown up on CYOC. But I doubt Adama wants to
surrender the administration of it.

Okay, I've not been to this site in years, but Brayn's email called
me back....
- If you're unable to register, Botcomics does provide a way to
submit a trouble ticket to get it fixed. On the other hand, I don't
know how promptly they respond to those...
- The Botcomics rep is promising that they will loosen up the
restrictions on the Addventure soon (I hope this month?). I'm
pushing for that to mean removing the login requirement altogether,
but he's also talking about just removing it for viewing but
requiring login to post. I'd rather not have it come to that.
- Anyone who wants to set up their own copy of the Addventure, well
they'll get no objection from me... they'll have to administer it
themselves though unless they want to run the actual Addventure
software too. But I still have hopes that the Addventure will get
back to normal.
- I've been thinking of making some kind of Addventure backup, but
at the moment there's 284,630 episode files, 66,213 comment files,
and 28,086 tag files. That's a LOT. And that's ignoring the 2
million (or so) files for unused options, which could be recreated
with a script or program if needed. A script could do the backup
but I want to avoid putting a heavy load on the server.
If anything changes, I'll post a message here.
