Does anyone know of any movies or books where a male character is
forced to take on a female role and ends up willingly living as a
female after the need has passed? I'm not interested in magical
transformations or fetish stuff, but simple crossdressing to hide
or pull off a role and then never bothering to change back.

I would like to know too, but I can't really think of any that
fills both parts of the request. TV Tropes has a page on a similar
trope:

The only one I can think of offhand is Aoi Futaba from the
manga/anime "You're Under Arrest". He was a police officer who
worked in drag in a sting operation and continued to do so
afterwards.
Two examples of the reverse that I can think of is Winter
Ihernglass from Django Wexler's Shadow Campaigns series, who had
escaped from a girl's orphanage, disguised herself as a man and
joined the army. After the need for her deception had ended(as her
commander knew of her true gender and there was a regiment of women
that Winter was in charge of, and many of her soldiers knew the
truth as well), she continued to be a man(on an amusing note, in
the second book she went on a mission as a woman and her immediate
superior who isn't in the know kept thinking of how unconvincing
she was as a woman).
Second was the sergeant(who's name I can't think of off hand) in
Terry Pratchett's "Monstrous Regiment", who continued to be a man
long after the need for it had passed.

Maybe look into Harajuku Takenoko Kouban, it`s about a cop who is
forced to work undercover as a woman as part of an all-female
police unit. I have only seen the first few chapters but it I
suspect he will get used to it before too long.

There was Young Doctors in Love. A tough Mafia guy is forced to
crossdress to visit his hospitalized father. He's very
unconvincing, though another doctor falls for him. He eventually
opens a club for crossdressers.

I can't believe no-one's mentioned David Duchovny in Twin Peaks
yet.

Corporal "Nobby" Nobbs goes in drag as a disguise in Klatch in one
book and seems to want to stay that way, and on duty in another
with Sergeant Angua the werewolf to catch muggers -- seems to enjoy
that excessively.
I've seen suggestions for fanfiction in which Nobby is badly hurt
and a "seamstress" gets a fatal head injury, and the Watch's
resident Igor with help from colleagues puts Nobby's brain into her
body... of course Nobby takes it in stride and is soon back on
duty. I don't think that such a story exists yet, and I haven't
seen really good Pratchett fanfic.

Guest, what series is Nobby from?

Nobby Nobbs is a character from Terry Pratchett's Discworld
books(he is in the Watchmen books from the series). He first
appears in "Guards! Guards!", but I think the first time he wears
drag is in "Jingo".
