Sam (2016)

So the majority on here thinks Sam is a turd? I tried to give it a chance but as I stated early it just wasn't that good. It was disappointing because Sam was a movie made by Sony and it was still a turd. Production value was laughable. And like someone else said, what was up with the black fades for screen transitions? Was this supposed to be a made for TV movie?

And the whole debate between Sam and Switch is easy. Ellen Barkin was more believable as a man trapped in a woman's body than Natalie Knepp.
Let's not forget her body too. So freaking sexy and gorgeous.

"So the majority on here thinks Sam is a turd?"

I'd wouldn't call it so soon. A majority of us have yet to watch it.

From: guest , 92 months, post #23
Because it's not even available for most of the world, I'll watch it when it's free on YouTube

Other than here, the reviews I've read have been very good.

I just saw it and I would give it a 5/10. I didn't hate it but I doubt I'll ever watch it again. It was super cheesy and the editing was really bad. I liked Switch a lot more than I liked this.

I'm now looking forward to Sex Trip and especially looking forward to ReAssignment.

I can't hate on anything to bad that try's to tackle this kinda of material.

I haven't seen it but I'm not too surprised a lot of people don't like it. The anticipation here in this community was sooooo (inexplicably) high, I thought. It seemed like it wasn't going to break too far from the clichés of the genre, but I know people here are thirsty for new material. Sometimes, the higher the expectation, the greater the disappointment.

I wonder if, say, "Dating the Enemy" or "Boy Girl Thing" had taken so long would people have buzzed more but liked them less. (I know those are swaps, not transformations.) I was just curious.

I dropped more coin to watch this before my DVD arrives.

It wasn't a perfect movie, but it was hardly bad.

I found the movie quite enjoyable, and the story it told was paced quite nicely. While I found the male Sam rather unlikable, I think that her transformation was quite redeeming. I found myself being able to relate to several (but not all) of the characters... and I found myself wishing to be our transformed titular character.

I would classify this one as a gender-bending Rom-Com, because the main focus of the story was on the transformation of a man with a bad attitude towards women, learning about the world through a woman's eyes - told in a light-hearted way, with some romance involved.

I feel that there were a few poorly written parts of the movie where subjects or characters were perhaps a tad hard to believe, and some subjects touched upon, that probably could have used a bit more than cursory mention.

I recall only one unanswered question that this movie never bothered to even come close to exploring --Click to show spoiler
Ubj jnf Fnz noyr gb bcrengr nf Fnznagun jvgu ab inyvq vqragvsvpngvba?

Some have mentioned the scene transitions, and if you're looking for them, they do seem a bit long... but if you're not looking for them, most seem to be about right for a movie that uses such a transition. I did notice one scene where the framing of the shot didn't make sense to me -- that was one of the first interactions between Sam and Alexander Blondell. They got all of Bryan Batt's head in the shot, but seemed to chop most of Natalie Knepp's head... well, most of Ms Knepp altogether right out of the shot.

Overall, I thought it was fun and enjoyable, but due to a few imperfections, I'd give it a 4 out of 5, and a 3.5 out of 5 for the TG aspect.

I'll be creating an actual thread for reviews of the movie shortly, my review here will be there too.

From: cj , 92 months, post #33
Hmmm... I could have sworn that we had an actual entry here for this movie, but I'm not seeing it. I'd like to give someone like our fine friend Saint a chance to submit one, since he was so on top of the developments and announcements for this one.

How 'bout it Saint, want to submit an entry for Sam ?

From: Air Gear , 91 months, post #34
"I'm sorry. Mr Simon Templar is currently out of the office. However, he'll be sure to contact you when he returns. I can't say that it's the usual thing he does but he always gives every request serious consideration."

From: cj , 91 months, post #35
Well, if you have the time, and want to tackle it, feel free. I'm sure Saint is just busy, That's why I'm not offering to do it at the moment myself. We could give him a few more days too, but if someone else gets to it before Saint or I, please do.

Just be sure to frist check both the Unapproved submissions list (scroll to the bottom for the newest submission awaiting approval) and the What's New / Main page (newest entries are at the top of this list) to make sure nobody best you to it.

I had a different opinion than CJ on 'Sam' on some levels.
I too found it to not be as bad as it could have been, or that some were selling it as. That said, I thought it was a little trite and trope-ridden. I thought the pacing was perhaps a touch unbelievable with regards toClick to show spoiler

That said, I found Knepp to be nothing less than luminous. She was adorable and relatable in her role, and that made all the difference for me. Her scenes with Batt showed a chemistry that I thought was lacking with much of the rest of the cast. Although I like Stacy Keach, I think he was badly miscast as the SRU wizard with the serial numbers filed off.

Another quibble I had was the apartment set(s). These were supposed to be apartments, but they were clearly and obviously filmed in a hotel. The obvious escape exit map on the door was a dead giveaway, as well as the table placement in front of it. It's a quibble, I know, but I found it jarring me out of the fantasy.

I think I'd give it a 2.5 stars out of 5 for both story and TG elements.
Knepp gets a 4.5 independently though. She was great.

From: Air Gear , 91 months, post #37
OK, how's this for a post-film rationalisation which is almost certainly what the creators did not have in mind and probably never even thought of in the first place.

The old man in the shop played by Stacy Keach was future Sam who was coming to the end of his life and it hadn't been a good experience because of how young Sam had been like and how that carried forward later in life.

So, this was old Sam's attempt to force his younger self onto a radically different to produce a different outcome for his younger self (and possibly even write himself out of existence). Given the other things that happen in this movie that really are beyond the realm of the possible, time travel and alternate universes shouldn't really be that out of place, would it?

For argument's sake, would a scene near the end of the film implying this scenario made it any better, do you think?

From: guest (KJ) , 91 months, post #38
Ummm, I like the idea of an older man coming back in time to show his younger self that his path as a man is not the right one, and correcting his younger self to going forward as a female.

But would that not then make the older man now an older woman?

From: guest (jimbo) , 91 months, post #39
KJ, interesting point. I think it would be like back to the future where he had to get his mom and dad together or be wouldn't be there or exist. So I think at the point he turns into a woman, his future self would as well. Just my thoughts.

From: Air Gear , 91 months, post #40
It depends on which theory of time travel and branching multiverses you're working on, the answer would be

1. Yes
2. No
3. Yes but
4. No but
5. Other
