This episode is actually based on a real life circumstance. The doctor, a gender specialist from a large east coast hospital, theorized that gender behavior could be learned and used this tragedy as an experiment. Sadly, it failed, as portrayed in the story, because the young "girl" never felt right in her feminized body.

Still, the botched circumcision and the attempted raising as a girl were true to life. Goes to show you can't force a gender role on someone, be it genetic or mental.

Never base your conclusions on a single incident. You never know, its possible that person was a female to male TS born in a male body and changed to a female such that she'd want to switch back to male.

I think they took two different reallife incidences , omited some things to protect the actual people involved and presto! Television mimicry , mirroring life in these here modern times . Though . most persons that change things gender-related don't regret that decision much , if not at all . hmmm . . .

This is basically the story of a boy named David, born in 1967, . The researcher was John Money. The story was told in the book "As Nature Made Him," by John Colapinto.

I seem to remember an episode of Horizon about the real life case this was based on. They had no problems about giving names etc. I think there was one where they explained the story of it and found the guy. Then a few years later there was a follow up after the guy killed himself.
