The Chalker book MEDUSA (vol. 4 of the Lords of the Diamond series)
is seldom brought up by fans. Basically, there are microbes with a
will on the planet Medusa, and they want a sexual balance of about
10 to 1 on the female side. It's by far the best book of the LOTD
series, but not perfect.

DAW: Awesome! I was just wondering when you would finish the next
story. I'll read it tomorrow when I've had more sleep.
Captain Cylon: I haven't read any of Chalker's books, but I do
intend to read them eventually.

just like to add my recomendation and drop a note of thanks to the
author aj james. I have enjoyed reading all of the authors stories,
all of which have a strong plot and use a variety of the tf
universes and devices. Would love to know what new stories the
author has in progress

For a nice surprise, check out "The Red Tape War," written by
several authors including Jack Chalker. Totally tongue-in-cheek
sendup of some of their most cliche'd devices. Knocks down the
fourth wall and has some real fun with it all. Warning: Lots of
inside jokes so it's actually MORE fun if you've read plenty of
other materials by the authors.
Now, CHALKER...
Is all over the place.
He was prolific and sometimes very imaginative but also fell into
some rote formulas. Sometimes, he'd take a good idea and just beat
it to death, then dig it up and beat it some more. And the PC
political preaching! Oh spare me! That, more than anything, makes
Chalker's work feel dated. Think late 1970s early 1980s
touchy-feely silliness. Unfortunate.
If you can overlook some of that...
"Identity Matrix" was pretty good. Personal story, global
conspiracy, aliens, the works. Grit your teeth through the
preaching and it's all right. Fun twist ending.
"Downtiming the Night Side" was an anemic, again preachy,
body-hopping time travel story that just seemed to lose its way.
"Midnight At The Well Of Souls" and its FIRST TWO sequels were
great. Don't bother with the rest of the series.
"Four Lords of the Diamond" books were similar but decent. Fun
variations between "magic" transformations, body-swapping, and
cybernetic manipulations.
The "Soul Rider" books played around with lots of similar themes
but went with a different and somewhat mysterious setting. Devolved
into some preachy mush but still had good moments.
"River of the Dancing Gods" is a cute Chalker-ish takeoff of the
classical medieval fantasy world. That one and its (again steadily
deteriorating) sequels held up okay. Chalker tried to resurrect
that world into a new cycle but never got beyond what would have
been the first book before the publisher pulled the plug.
"Rings of the Master" No, not an LOTR ripoff... well maybe a
little. Pretty good overall. Or maybe just enjoyed the artfully
stolen "Les Miserables" device.
"Changewinds..." Meh. He'd definitely lost his fastball on this
one. Seemed like a struggle even with a couple of new turns on
mostly well-worn motifs and devices.
"Dancers in the Afterglow" One of his earlier ones. Interesting to
see him explore themes that would become endlessly repeated later.
Conquest and totalitarianism with transformation as a weapon,
secret agents, perseverance after debilitating change, the hero
squeezed between a changing mission and inflexible superiors. Only
one book; not an endless series; so worth a look.
Do NOT bother with:
The Messiah Choice (Evil compuer vs. the world)
The G.O.D. Inc books. (Interdimensional conspiracy stuff)
The Quintara Marathon (Satan & demons are aliens)
The Wonderland Gambit books (weak Matrix ripoff)
War of Shadows (Okay conspiracy adventure but nobody changes into
anything)
Chalker definitely made his contributions. I kept hoping he'd pull
it together and put out something good again but he died before
that happened.
His stuff (some of it) definitely goes on the list.

Thanks for the kind comment Stu! For whatever reason I don't seemed
to have garnered very many reviews for this particular chapter in
the Ragnarok Rising storyline.

To Pygar:
Some of the books you mention not liking, I liked rather well, but
to each his/her own.
I am confused by your description of 'The Messiah Choice'. I
thought the plot involved demons trying to usea computer to conquer
the world. If it wasn't that book, what book was it?!?
And didn't 'The Wonderland Gambit' come out before 'The Matrix'? I
believe Chalker said it was loosely based on Philip K. Dick. And
speaking of 'The Matrix', it was a rip-off itself of 'The
Invisibles' comic by Grant Morrison.

I hope this thread isn't restricted to just professional
publications, I'd recommend anything written by 'net writer
Christopher Leeson. Almost every pro-written tg novel is flawed in
some big way, even (or especially) Jack Chalker. To my taste,
Leeson avoids most of their mistakes and is as good is as the best
when tg is the subject. The funniest tg novel I've ever read is his
THE BIG SWITCH,(a send-up of the detective genre), found at
tgcomics.com, Big Closet, and Fictionmania.
Someone above praised "Joe Bates." Ehhh. It seemed to be a
meadering book without a point. Maybe the author stopped at last
because he finally realized he didn't have anything specific he
wanted to say. Most readers caught on to that a lot quicker than he
did. For anyone willing to tackle a tg saga as long or longer than
Joe Bates, there is Leeson's (co-authored with Ellie Dauber)
"Eerie, Arizona," a continuing saga of novels and novelettes set in
the 1870's and is both a real Western and a multifaceted tg
supernovel full of rich incidents and characters, drama and humor.
Find it at FM and BC.

Leeson is one of the better writers on FictionMania, certainly, and
better than many published authors.

Speaking of quality TG, there's a new Morpheus story, it's set in
the Legacy universe:

Dale,
Right on both counts. I got a little sloppy trying to be brief.
I mentioned "Matrix," (and refrained from mentioning "The 13th
Floor") just because I was looking for something more instantly
familiar.

Just like to pop in again and say that the revised version of my
story "Transfigured" has been posted on Fictionmania BigCloset
Topshelf, & Tgstorytime.
This version is, in my not so humble, opinion a massive improvement
over the original.

Thanks all you for recommendations.
DAW the revised version of transfigured was better than the first.
I can't believe no one had posted a review on Fictionmania for it.
It definitly deservers more attention than it has been given.

@Al: I would recommend starting with his Legacy Universe stories.
Those stories among his best. And also "The Academy".
