This is a series of books by Jack L. Chalker that deal with
alternate realities and the people in them and who control them.
These stories predate the "Matrix" movies but bear some similarity.
The central charaters continually find themselves in different
realities as different people, most often of the opposite gender.
The books are well written sci-fi/fantasy with quite a
metamorphosing twist.
