  • Title "The Casque of Lamont T. Yado", In "Asimov's SF Adventure Magazine Vol 1 No. 2, Spring 1979", (C) 1979, Sci-Fi, Transformation type is technological (why isn't it on the list?)

Description

As the title suggests the plot is loosely based on The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe, and the ending is another horrible pun on the priginal ending.
In Poe's story Montresor takes revenge on Fortunato by bricking him up in the cellar.
In Milan's story, the villain wants to steal a time helmet that will give him superhuman speed. The hero helps him, but alters the helmet's settings so that it gradually slows the villain into eternal immobility.
Instead of being encased in stone the villain has effectively been turned to stone.

Peace-loving hippie Mark Meadows, a.k.a. Captain Trips, was a character in the Wild Cards series created by Victor Milan. A brilliant biochemist, Meadows used combinations of drugs to transform himself into one of his "friends", his super-powered alter egos. One of these "friends" was a beautiful Korean woman, a martial artist named Isis Moon, a.k.a. Moonchild.
