Description
Adapted from the same novel (by Yoshikaze Takeuchi), and treating
some of the same themes as Satoshi Kon's anime "Perfect Blue", but
definitely not the same story as the animated feature.
There isn't much to say about the plot that wouldn't be a spoiler.
The TG element is strong, but the transformation scenes aren't very
interesting (in terms of special effects).
The narrative is pretty straight-forward, but the slow pacing and
cinematic style of desaturated colors and many scenes composed of
single static camera shots -- possibly meant to evoke the
self-absorbed and delusional mental state of the two main
characters -- combine to make a watching for the TG pay-off (about
3/4 of the way through the film) a pretty tedious exercise. Still,
I would recommend it to TG fans, and fans of contemporary Japanese
cinema.
It is now available in the US as a region 1 DVD, with subtitles.
