A barbarian tries to rescue a princess from an evil wizard, but unfortunately for him things don't go as planned. Set in an alternate universe to the original Exiern story where things play out differently at a critical point in the rescue attempt ... but ultimately still less than ideally for our hero.
Told in flashback this time to Tiffany, willing and enthusiastic subordinate and head enforcer to the wizard Faden after she asked the captive princess why despite her repeated and increasingly forward attempts, she still can't get her master to sleep with her.
<spoiler>Turns out Tiffany *was* once the male barbarian who tried to rescue the princess. It seems saying that things went especially badly for our hero in the rescue attempt would be at the very least an understatement.</spoiler>
<spoiler>Like Total Recall except in reverse in this case, with the man who was a brave, courageous hero who laughed in the face of death instantly transformed by dark magic both into an opportunistic individual that threw their lot in with the villain at the first opportunity and also the added twist of being turned into a woman with absolutely no memory of her past life or identity who possibly may want neither back.</spoiler>
