I'm looking for a story that I read a few years ago. The main character had cancer (I believe), and was the guinea pig for a scientist. The scientist was trying to save his dog, who was dying. The "cure" ending up making the mc look something like melted wax, and have then the ability to shape-shift, but she finds that she can't really hold male shapes.
