Very funny, with flashes of brilliance, but Smith has done better.

An amusing book, and the TG is certainly the central theme. The book doesn't delve very psychologically deep (Thorne Smith is a lighthearted James Thurber wannabe), but it's witty and worth the read. It deals mostly with superficial aspects of gender change, but it does so cleverly. Remember that it was written over a half century ago and that attitudes towards gender were a bit more. . . conservative then.

Body swapping comedy in 1938! (I am guessing on the year - but you get the point) I really like Thorne Smith. He was the inventor of TOPPER, for you who have seen the more ancient tv shows. This book was written back in pre-WWII days and expresses VERY CONSERVATIVE attitudes - and a lot of concern about "social classes", which musta been a big topic back then. An exception to the consevatism is a ongoing theme of drinking and womanizing throughout, which I find strange today. Perhaps this is a book best to read to learn about the ideas of GC wayyyyyyy before GIs went over to Denmark and came back wearing high heels... And the writing style is sooooo "Gentleman's Quarterly" it gets hard to follow sometimes... BUT a CLASSIC! Get a copy for your library - and find the old movie of the same name in your video rental store (Like watching Fred and Aster in reverse - except no dancing - ha!) It is worth while checking out Smith's other outlandish books, if you like this one - no GC elsewhere, though. Finalnotes: Did I mention that when they switch back, the man finds out HE IS PREGNANT (I guess they got BORED in the bedroom as they slept in their switched bodies!) Also, the TS Story "CHAN" was obviously inspired by this book.
