Looking for books where a human is possessed by a God and gains their powers.
From: guest (Proteus) , 1 months, post #1
I just saw the 2017 movie "The Mummy" where at the end Tom Cruise's character gets possessed by Set, gains his powers, but still retains most of his original personality. It got me looking for books or comics with a similar premise. So far I've only found the wonder woman villain Circe, who was possessed by the goddess Hecate. I love comic books but I would love to find some actual novels with a similar premise. Any suggestions? Thanks, in advance!

The only one that comes to mind is "The Immortal" by Christopher Pike. It's been quite a few years since I've read it but I seem remember that the 2 female best friends were unknowingly possessed by 2 rival Greek goddesses and secretly plotting to kill eachother. Hope that helps.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'gains their powers'. If you are possessed doesn't it mean you don't call the shots?

In any case, I remember a Smallville episode where Lois is possessed and all of a sudden has new powers.

In the newer Flash Gordon, the female lead gets possessed by a witch and gains powers.

And in a recent season of The Flash, 'The Thinker' possessed a variety of male and female characters who have powers. He collects their powers with him when as he disposes of their bodies when he takes over his next victim.

I don't know of any books, but there was an episode of the 1995 animated series "Iron Man"
called "Beauty Knows No Pain" where the villain Madam Masque becomes the incarnation of Iris, after gaining her crown or scepter from some forgotten pyramid. That's all I got.

The incarnations of immortality series by Piers Anthony. The whole premise is that avatars like Death, Chronos, the Devil, etc, are held by mortals who inherit the stations under a specific set of circumstances: like killing death, living your life backwards, or being the most evil man alive. There's like 8 books in the series.

Would Superior Spider Man count, where a villain switches bodies with Spider Man, gains his powers but also becomes good promising to be a better hero than the former Spider Man. I'm not sure if Spider Man's body "corrupted" his mind and turned him from his villainous ways or if it was his mind being housed in a new brain with different neural pathways or just having the powers.

Dr. Octopus is far from being a god... still he became a good man till the end of his Spidey days.

So, no

Maybe, in simple way, one where a female or better LI got possessed by a god to talk to the MC... during that sporting the god's majestic attire

Bedlam, from the Young Justice comics. He was a kid who was given aa ancient toy found by his archeologist father for his birthday. Turns out it was from Atlantis and housed some dark God, who both corrupted and imbued him with vast power. I think that's what you're looking for comic book wise.

Would the Sphinx from Marvel comics count? He doesn't exactly get possessed by a god, but an ancient sentient jewel that grants him vast powers and immortality. He then sends the next 5,000 years trying to end his immortal life. He's godlike, and a great villain. So I think he might meet your criteria.

"Avatar" from the old animated Gargoyles show.
