Review: "Sam" (2016)
Page 1 2
From: cj , 92 months, post #1
Sam wasn't a perfect movie, but it was hardly bad.

I found the movie quite enjoyable, and the story it told was paced quite nicely. While I found the male Sam rather unlikable, I think that her transformation was quite redeeming. I found myself being able to relate to several (but not all) of the characters... and I found myself wishing to be our transformed titular character.

I would classify this one as a gender-bending Rom-Com, because the main focus of the story was on the transformation of a man with a bad attitude towards women, learning about the world through a woman's eyes - told in a light-hearted way, with some romance involved.

I feel that there were a few poorly written parts of the movie where subjects or characters were perhaps a tad hard to believe, and some subjects touched upon, that probably could have used a bit more than cursory mention.

I recall only one unanswered question that this movie never bothered to even come close to exploring --Click to show spoiler
Ubj jnf Fnz noyr gb bcrengr nf Fnznagun jvgu ab inyvq vqragvsvpngvba?

Some have mentioned the scene transitions, and if you're looking for them, they do seem a bit long... but if you're not looking for them, most seem to be about right for a movie that uses such a transition. I did notice one scene where the framing of the shot didn't make sense to me -- that was one of the first interactions between Sam and Alexander Blondell. They got all of Bryan Batt's head in the shot, but seemed to chop most of Natalie Knepp's head... well, most of Ms Knepp altogether right out of the shot.

Overall, I thought it was fun and enjoyable, but due to a few imperfections, I'd give it a 3.5-4 out of 5, and a 3.5 out of 5 for the TG aspect.

Thanks CJ!

However the spoiler tag is unclickable. Probably because you copy paste it from another thread.

On the matter you mentioned in that spoiler.

Yes, no worries on that link. If someone wonders what the link is for, they're probably going to figure out that that concern was addressed in the spoiler text.... or they'll read this and figure out that the link may spoil things if they haven't watched the movie.

Still sounds sort of interesting. Where is it available for viewing? As far as I have heard, it won't be out in DVD till November.

"Where is it available for viewing?"

See post 19 of the "Sam (2016)" thread.

And please keep the posts here about reviews of the movie. General discussion can be found in the "Sam (2016)" thread. Thank you. :-)

I've just noticed this movie is getting uncommonly good reviews on Amazon.com

Yeah, but that's based on only 11 reviews. It'll take some time for the reviews be more representative to the feeling of the general public-at-large.

I just saw it on Google and I thought it was really good. The old cliche about the male chauvinist having to live life as a female but well done. Good performances and gawd! ...the female lead, Natalie Knepp, was great in her role.

I know I'll watch it again.

My "review" ..... I do not know how to cover spoilers, and there are light ones here, so STOP now if you do not want to get a little look, but I do not reveal the ending.

Some of what I disliked;

Cheap type filming in a few places, looked low budget, but hey, it was!
The oh I am taking my cousins high paying job for a while....No, what should be is you are going to be a waitress. In a whole different work environment, economic status, along with being a new gender.
Over the top cliche male chauvinists from Sam, Seymour and guy in bar.
"Samantha" is cute, but not so hot that men would be falling over themselves for her. In my opinion, "Margaret" was way more attractive. Would rather have seen her in the lead role.
They could have made Samantha cuter by giving her a shorter hairstyle. I would have preferred straight, just below or at shoulders, with bangs. Or a bob.
The girlfriend "Cynthia" was made more annoying than she was by the poor acting.
Morgan Fairchild, good part for her, written poorly.

Some of what I liked;

It was a TG movie!
Great to see Stacy Keach!
Bryan Batt is just good in anything! I would almost be gay man if I could look as good as him.
Once Sam became Samantha, she went to "girl school".
The building of her feminine side, seeing/hearing her thoughts. Discussing her libido, or when looking at the baby, feeling something, and/or thinking, that being a woman most likely a mother may be her future now.
Describing how now as a woman she can sense way better what people are thinking or feeling.
There was a choice, remain Samantha or go back to being Sam, which to me would mean being with Margaret
The ending, but wanted more follow up of what came later, as in seeing snapshots from the next 3 or 4 years.

OK, that is it. The wait is over for me, has been a while coming.

I liked the long hair. If they'd have had more time, I would have loved to have seen Sam learn how to deal with care and styling of that beautiful mane.

I agree with your likes KJ, especially so on the snapshots idea for the after story story.

Spoilers ahead and I don't know how to hide it with the 'fancy click'. Spoiler territory!!

I agree with some of your dislikes KJ but for me they were not dislikes but more just questionable situations. I did NOT know the shopkeeper was Stacy Keach until you mentioned it and yeh, it was great to see him. Bryan Batt was perfect in the movie.

I liked Sam's long hair but frankly I think she would have looked with just about any hair style. Overall a classic TG movie.

From: guest (KJ) , 92 months, post #13
It was just my preference on the hair length, to me she would be cuter. Just like I think Margaret was more attractive.

I liked it a lot. And the lead is gorgeous. Wish that happened to me : (

...continued from above.

"I feel that there were a few poorly written parts of the movie where subjects or characters were perhaps a tad hard to believe, and some subjects touched upon, that probably could have used a bit more than cursory mention."

cj wrote this and I agree. I posted with about 10 minutes to go and I knew how it would end - a very pleasing ending for me.

...but back to cj' point about the some of characters inevitability of which I only found one... the boss. The other things are but minor quibbles (Sam is wearing expertly applied eyeliner too early on is one example, and she's also wearing panties before she goes to the store (which perhaps can be explained away by the fact that male Sam is such a womanizer it's not inconceivable a pair might have laying around his pad). And, the male Sam...two tads too brusque... but this was after all fantasy. I could've made it perfect. ; ) For how it affected me 4.5 out of 5.

From: guest (anon yet again) , 91 months, post #19
'believably' instead of inevitability and an apostrophe 's' on cj...really should proof before submitting. : )

Yeah -- it was almost unwatchable for me. I fast-forwarded through much of it.
