I had a thought when looking at the Unapproved submissions.
I wanted everyone's input on this idea though.
If the submission can be confirmed as having a TF, swap, or other
qualifying condition... AND is NOT currently listed in the
database...
What about just approving it and then letting the masses make the
edits to clean it up? Obviously, the trusted user who approves the
submission will still have to deal with fixing formatting issues
and removing links that violate the rules, but the rest will be
approved as submitted.
The only real issue that I have with this, is that there are so few
edits to existing entries - I'm not sure if it's that nobody really
cares (which won't concern many), or that nobody understands how to
do edit an entry.
I don't know. Maybe it's not a good idea. Just something that
popped into my head. Anyhow, I have a few minutes to kill - let's
see how many I can tackle.

I should rephrase that one part to read:
~~~ I'm not sure if it's that nobody really cares (in which case
many will be concerned about errors or messy-looking entries), or
that so few understand how to do edit an entry here (which is
concerning to me).
Try a smaller batch as a test or something like that. Maybe ten or
so and let people know which ones they are and then step back to
see how it's handled.
My vote is to go back to TG only, let man to dog, man to man, etc.
have their own website
If I understand correctly...
You're trying to clear through a backlog of "pending approval" by
getting them into the database where you would essentially have to
do just as much work to clean them up (work which isn't getting
done anyway) but now they wouldn't be on any list so no one would
even know to
fix the entries?
I'm not sure I would trust the general community to be better at
clean up than the trusted users. It's very doubtful they would be
very active at it and like you said I don't believe most people
even know that
they can change other people's entries much less how.
What sort of clean up typically needs to be done? Are we talking
typos and poor grammar or ambiguous descriptions, because the
latter would seem to require somebody to do the research that isn't
really getting done because I know it's time consuming. Plus, if
the masses are doing it wrong during the submission process,
they'll be just as bad at fixing the existing database when it does
need to be done.
Sorry if I'm unclear here.
How about a crowdsourcing thread? Put a pending entry up and get
the masses to comment/correct/clear the submission (or deny).
Repeat at regular intervals (daily or whatever), add the previous
one once cleared +/- fixed or discard.
I wouldn't trust the masses to help with quality control.
Keep going... these are all great thoughts.
Vup, I think you have it. thanks for the emphasis - that could be
part of the issue with things, visitors not knowing that they can
edit the entries.
I'm liking this thread.
As for what the entry should look like... feel free to pull up most
any nice looking entry you like and then click the "Edit this Page"
link in the left menu, you'll get a good idea of what a properly
formatted entry should look like.
You can also check out the Submit Help
page, you'll be looking for the "After" example. As for how to
edit an existing entry, we have an Editing Help
page. Each of these pages also shows up under the text entry box
when either Submitting (for the Submit) or Editing (for the
Editing) an entry. But we'll address any issues with submissions or
edits (and their help pages) in another thread.
Hmm maybe we could try the idea that you thought about on the day
when you and I talk about the submissions that I submitted.
Since some of the transformations are from the same anime, TV show,
Film, and etc, we can put them into one blog that was already
submitted so that way we won't have to make too many submissions
and have them on pending.
Oh yeah, we'll probably do some of that too. IIRC, we're getting
close to one group of those now.
The masses editing Wikipedia seem to manage more often than not. As
long as there's someone from management overseeing the process,
it'll work far more often than not.
I have no comment on Wikipedia's editing process... because it'd
all be off-topic and not fit for public consumption. Just know that
it's a sore subject with me, and I won't talk about it here as it's
not pertinent to this site.
... But other's can certainly weigh in if they have had good
interactions there.
As an early user of this site, before I ever posted or contributed
anything, it would annoy me when I read something here, searched
for, found, and maybe even bought it, only to find out it wasn't as
described.
Really brief, questionable things aren't why I come here. Those
things are everywhere.
I have problems with the HTML syntax which has made it really hard
for me to contribute to approving postings. I really wish I could
do more in this area.
But auto-approving every submission and hoping people like me will
be able to edit it doesn't sound realistic. I feel it would degrade
the integrity of the site, sending people on wild goose chases only
to find what they are not looking for. That frustration, in the
early years of the site, made it not a place I came often. Things
have gotten much better, as the Internet has grown and thanks to
the users and moderators here.
Thanks Holly, that's the type of input I'm looking for also. The
format of the entries is actually quite simple once you've done it
a few times... I'm going to have to do some thinking on how to
present a cheat sheet and some quick lessons on it. Perhaps that
would be helpful to yourself and others. Might take me a bit to
think of a good way to present it.
That story sounds more interesting than most fiction stories.
My editing experiences are almost exclusive restricted to science
articles and the factual side of history articles (i.e. This event
happened at this time as opposed to interpreting history). Also
well over 95% carry the minor (m) tag as it's usually spelling and
grammar mistakes, not anything more controversial than that.
I generally avoid all the celebrities and personalities and the
like. The biggest controversy I was ever involved with was the edit
war over whether or not to include Renee Zellweger in the entry of
Dazed and Confused or not.
I agree with what cj didn't
say about wikipedia but I'll stay on topic:
I can proof read but only when I can figure out what is actually
meant by the writer. Some people, regardless of their native
language, just can't put together a coherent sentence and you end
up with some sort of ambiguity, lack of context or outright "word
salad". It's frustrating and I'd like to re-iterate Holly Dunn's
point. I don't think it should go into the database until it's
cleaned up. Once it's there it won't get polished. It's not
happening now and it probably won't later.
