Sup all! Sirge here, the ever-silly simian who is also a writer!
I'm planning on making a story coming up this Halloween and was
having problems really deciding on what to do for it. It's going to
be a head-swap featuring some sort of monster or creature, but I
couldn't really decide on one. My main idea was going to be a
head-swap of a human with a skeletal horse or a Cerberus of some
sort.
However, it got me thinking about something: Are there any monsters
or creatures that focus on swapping heads with other beings? I'm
talking about monsters of creatures from mythology or horror films.
I was considering making the story about a human meeting such a
monster. Of course, the problem with Google search is that you put
in something like "Creature Head-Swap" or "Monster Head-Swap" and
you usually just get a bunch of photo manips and Monster's Inc
related stuff.
So, since this message board is the master of finding awesome
obscure monsters or creatures that I've never heard of, I thought
I'd come here. Do any of you fine gentlemen/women/horses/etc, know
of any creatures or monsters that swap heads? It can be from
mythology, fairy horror films, or horror stories. Please no online
fiction or web stories, this is mainly just published media or
myth. Thanks for taking the time to read through this rather long
diatribe, I look forward to hearing what the message board has to
add.

"Are there any monsters or creatures that focus on swapping heads

The closest match that I can think of off the top of my head
(almost-pun intended) is The Headless Horseman from "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"
-- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Sleepy_Hollow
But it's been a VERY long time since I've read it (or a condensed
and kid-friendly/friendlier version). If I recall, the HHm was
after Ichabod Crane's head... or someone's head... or everyone's
head.
You also have Frankenstein's Monster which was crafted from various
body parts. Of course, that spawned other such stories and movies
with other similar themes.
There were the Martian experiments in "Mars Attacks!"
, but I don't think that that would quite qualify for your list.

I don't have anything to add, but I'm interested in your upcoming
story; I'm looking forward to it.

There was a couple brief scenes in Mars Attacks
where the aliens swap a woman's
and dog's
heads.
There was the movie, The Borrower
, about an alien serial killer who wears the heads of its victims,
but it's from 1991 and very low-budget. (trailer
)

Thanks everyone for your responses!
@CJ
Sleepy Hollow was not what I was looking for in particular, sorry.
Thanks for the input though. Mars Attacks! is more what I was
looking for.
@O2MO Thanks! I hope it lives up to your expectations, whatever it
ends up being. If you want a link to it once it's finish, just ask
and I'll be happy to supply it.
@JosieChung
I've heard of Borrower but never seen it. An alien head-swap does
sound appealing though, so that does give me a good idea of where I
may take the story.
But right now I think my biggest consideration is just a head-swap
with a skeletal horse. Still, if you guys know of more monsters or
creatures that swap heads with victims I'd like to hear it. Perhaps
some mythology bits if you can find them or maybe some old horror
stories or magazine articles. Once again, thanks for all your
feedback everyone.

There's Mombi from the Wizard of Oz.
In the last X-Files movie there was almost a TG head transplant but
they prevented it.
A regenerater getting experimented on. A curious scientist might
try to see if they can graft parts of a regenerater onto other
bodies or clones. This could result in a headswap.
There was that one story where an alien machine race just saw
humans as another type of machine. When one of the guys they saved
from an accident needed replacement parts they just took the parts
laying around the accident to do so.

I've heard of monsters that can detach their heads (Penanggalan,
nukekubi, dullahan), but these probably aren't what you want. I
think there's a strong possibility that you'll either have to make
up your own, or modify an existing myth. Is there a reason why this
monster might do this? The simplest reason I could think of would
be if this monster were some sort of trickster spirit or fey.

Bad hair day. :-)

@Syberia
Yeah, it's a trickster. I mainly like having creatures / animals /
beings of opposite genders, etc. stealing the bodies of their prey
usually temporarily just for kicks. I'll probably just make up my
own creature, like you suggested.
@cj
So the monster cares about his hair? I wasn't aware monsters were
so concerned about their appearance. Does explain why Medusa turns
people to stone though. :D

"So the monster cares about his hair?"
I dunno... I was just tossing the suggestion out there as a
possibility. "Bad hair day" is a
reason why a monster might
swap heads.
Although... I could imagine Sully from Monsters, inc. being a bit
of a Diva... that fur looks so soft and fluffy. :-)

Maybe you've seen this, but it might spark something if you
haven't. It's a 3 page short.

Also, love your stories. Especially the ones where some other
entity is in control of the protagonist. Normally, I don't really
enjoy reading stories where the protagonist is completely helpless
and powerless to do anything, that it all actually ends up
depressing, but some of your work is mild enough for me to actually
enjoy. It might just be me though. I simply haven't come across
many other works from other writers that would hit that balance.
Thank you for all your work!

@Leon
Wow, that was a dark yet funny and awesome little sequence there.
:) And I'm glad you enjoy my stuff.
I've decided that I'm most likely going to do a Cerberus head-swap,
an alien one, or a hydra. It will most likely be between those
three. Thanks for the input everyone, I was sure there would be
more monsters or mythological creatures that would swap heads but I
guess that isn't super common. Anyway, keep it real everyone and
keep those heads on your shoulders... Or on someone else's
shoulders! *Maniacal laughter*
