There are a couple of posts on this site - one here on the message
board, another fairly new entry to the database - that point to
something I have never seen before. Maybe it's a lot more common
and I just never noticed it. But here's what I found.
There is a post on this board - an old one, dates back almost ten
years - decrying the lame archiving of stories from "wayback
machine". A story that was cited as having been only partially
archived was "Just a Few Inches" by scidram. The story was about a
high school cheerleader, Carrie Roberts, who takes too big a dose
of diet pills to fit into a dress for a school dance and soon
discovers she is shrinking in height. Apparently, part of the story
was archived but not all of it.
You can actually find parts of scidram's story online if you're
willing to dig a little. Parts are on the minimizer's site and also
on The Process. I have found Chapters 1-9, and to tell the truth I
don't know if any more existed back in 2005 when the thread was
last update.
But I know for sure the story was completed... because the database
recently added the published book, "Just a Few Inches" by Tara St.
Pierre! I have purchased the book, and it IS the same story. There
has been a lot of editing and rewriting and there is the occasional
change (Carrie's five-year-old sister Kristie was renamed Kylie for
the book) but by and large the story is the same. I will mention
that in my humble opinion - and in the opinion of pretty much every
reviewer I've seen online - the book is EXCELLENT, touching on real
issues of self-esteem and positive body image. And I will also
state that it respects the SW genre in ways some other published
works do not.
This the first time I have seen a work of web fiction completed,
fleshed out and published professionally. I think we all have to
agree that web fiction, fan fiction and genre fiction is awfully
variable in quality: some is great, some so-so, some pretty bad,
and some, well, uhhh... "keep your day job" if you catch my drift.
It is great to see that scidram/Tara St. Pierre took a story that
might have started as a publicly available work of SW fantasy and
polished into a story worthy of publishing and selling.
Is this more common than I realize? This is the first time I've
seen a work of genre fiction published like this.
By the way, the link is on the isting on the transformations
database, but I'll repost it here if you'd like to check out the
book. It's available inKindle or paperback format:

Cobe,
Thank you for sharing this with the community here, and thank you
for your opinion that the book is excellent. I was the one who
(anonymously) posted about the publication of the book, figuring
that there might be people here interested in knowing.
In regard to a comment you made, the portion of the story you found
was all there was back then. I actually first started writing the
story in the mid-90s and got to the point where Carrie met with the
representatives from the pill company. Due to other things going on
in my life, I pushed the story to the back burner. Thought I made
several attempts to continue the story then, younger-me didn't have
it all fully fleshed out.
A couple years ago, it finally hit me. Honestly, I'm grateful I
waited because of the role social media plays in the story. I think
it's a BETTER story now that I ever could have made it back then.
Also, thanks to self-publishing options, I'm able to put it out
there and market it to the YA mainstream.
I've been sending copies to book bloggers, and I'm truly flattered
by the overwhelmingly positive response the story has gotten thus
far. I'm expecting reviews from about another dozen or so
bloggers--all of whom seemed genuinely intrigued by the story's
premise. In terms of total copies sold, it's not a "best seller" by
any means, but sales are steady, and I can dream that my "little"
story can break into the mainstream and that girls, women, and
anyone else who reads it can think about the themes of body image
and self-esteem.
I don't know how often this happens, but it does. "Fifty Shades of
Grey" was originally fan-fiction. That book and mine aren't
comparable, but maybe someday "Inches" will be as well-known.
Thanks again,
--Tara

Tara - Thanks for dropping in and sharing a bit more history of the
story with us.
It's always exciting to have one's work recognized by a the masses,
and I'm glad that you are on your way.
Congratulations!... and Good Luck in further success!
The size / SW TF isn't my thing... but the body-image and
self-esteem are certainly relatable. It's on my list of stories to
check out. Thanks!
