Um...why not just add a captacha to non-trusted users? Would be a
little annoying but would save you work. And would make a topic
that is not really about what this site is about not as common on
the recent updates.

"why not just add a captacha to non-trusted users?..."
From post #16:
"Maybe you should put a captcha box on it..."
There is a captcha box for any user who isn't logged-in (guests),
requiring one for users is likely something that would be more of
an annoyance. Especially for the Trusted Users when we are making
corrections/edits to many submissions and/or change requests.
And from post #11:
I know that Paul is doing his best to keep them from spamming the
site... seems that every time he deletes the user, they come back
and re-sign up.
I'm sure that there are probably IP addresses being blocked, but
the ruthless spammers will simply use proxies and larger ISPs,
where blocking an IP block would probably take out many legitimate
users too. Personally, IMO, the best way to stop spammers is to
make the act of spamming HURT (financially and/or physically). The
more painful it is to spam, the less likely they are to do it.

Is there a check routine to prevent unregistered user to use
registered account names ? Then creating an account with the name
"tshortshort" may allready kill the spambot easily.
Of course, adding "if ($_POST['username' != 'tshortshort') { ... }"
to the php-code could also do the trick... ;)
