A pending submission states that the movie "Gamer" "... contains various possession type transformations..."

I don't recall there being any possession-type controls (or transformations) in this movie like there were for the movie "Surrogates". But it's been awhile since I've watched it.

If anyone remembers, or has ready access to the movie and can confirm or deny this, it would be very much appreciated. What we're looking for IIRC would be if the gamer controls the player/character much like if they were possessing them.

From what I could remember (and find online), it looks like the gamer is NOT viewing the world from the player's/character's POV.

Without that possession-like POV (like we saw in "Surrogates"), my opinion is that this movie would not qualify for inclusion here as there isn't even the illusion that one person has transformed into someone else. How does everyone else feel about this one?

Yeah, you're right about the gamer seeing from a third-person perspective. But I don't think I'd like it being discounted from the database. The scenes where the gamers are speaking and the avatar speaks just like they did make it feel more like a "possession-type" thing. Yeah, it's so minor, that I personally don't care about its exclusion... but, I think it's so close to the borderline and might appeal to a fair bit of people for those specific scenes. I wouldn't want to take that away from them.

Any other opinions or ideas?

I've seen this movie and I'd also be in favor of including in the database and approving the submission.

The control in the movie did feel "possession-like" to me (despite the 3rd person perspective) given the way the real-life avatars are being controlled by the gamers. I found it appealed to me in a similar way that typical possessions from other sources do. In addition to the "shooting game" world, there's also a "Second-Life" like world called Society where the gamers control real-life avatars that can differ greatly in gender and appearance and can engage in more extreme behavior. These scenes show characters behaving very out-of-character, often in provocative or sexual ways, and it's actually one of the more memorable (though also disturbing) possession-like scenes I've seen.

Interestingly, I found an earlier post of mine on this message board from over five years ago before this movie came out where I described its potential given the information that leaked out; it has a few more details and examples about the avatar control. I guess I've been following the movie for a while.

Thanks!

That's a wonderful description rjeflak. So wonderful, that I added it to the, now approved, entry description (crediting you, of course).
