This movie is in release limbo. What's the point of making a movie if it's never released?

Message deleted by cj. Uh... wrong thread or off-topic. Either way this Sam and that "Sam" are different.

guest #261, it's an indie movie. It's playing the festival circuit. Sometimes these movies only ever play the festivals and then poof away to never be heard of again. But usually playing the festivals is an opportunity for the filmmakers to find financing for a release in theaters or on home video. I wouldn't be surprised if the radio silence on Sam right now meant that they are working on a deal to release it. But, the film industry is ephemeral, it's just as likely that we'll never hear anything else about Sam. Hell, there are movies produced inside the Hollywood studio system that get made and never release. That's just the reality of the industry.

Well said, Honest Abe. (Loved you in Gettysburg)

My question is why not release it on YouTube? It would be a lot cheaper then a DVD/blue ray release. Also more people will watch it besides just the few who know about the movie.

"why not release it on YouTube?"

My guess... The producers and investors are probably looking for a little bit of a return (financially) on their investment. They are in business to produce movies, after all. :-)

You can release films on Youtube as a legal pay to view option through a distributor.

From: guest (Guest2) , 106 months, post #268
The impression that I get is that Sitting Cat Productions, that produced SAM, is a New York based, small but connected, new production company. They're looking for legitimacy so they probably see YouTube as a small potatoes, undignified last resort. Cabin in the Woods had Joss Whedon and Sigoureny Weaver and it dat on a shelf for 3 years before finding distribution. River Phoenix's last movie sat on a shelf for 20 years and Theres an infamous Jerry Lewis Nazi movie that has never been released. Paradox Alice also took, like, 3 years to find distribution. It sucks but that's the reality of Independent Filmmaking

"You can release films on Youtube as a legal pay to view option through a distributor"

"No Way!" I said to myself, so I did a bit of digging.

HOLY COW! How did I not know this? *sigh*

My apologies everyone.

That's okay, cj. I knew about youtube PPV-type dist. but not the details. (For those who didn't: Go to the home page, look at the left hand column for 'movies' or 'TV shows', etc. You're presented w/ several links which sometimes ask for payment (they're usually at the top of the page that comes up after you click ;-) but they do have some free ones) )

I think Guest2 got it right, though, as to why Sam won't go out on yutoob anytime soon. The financiers wanna maximize their return/(minimize their loss) and if the studio would prefer to avoid making a reputation out-of-the-gate as a money-losing endeavor then it's probably actually in their best interest to be able to claim that their "prior works" are "seeking" or (better still) "in talks for" distribution than to admit that they made something that can't make all (or more) of its money back and had to resort to a "fire sale" of the commodity(ies) they produce(d).

It sounds like an interesting story but it amazes me how much people hold out for hope against hope that this is going to happen anytime soon. Someone else earlier in this thread said basically: "just stop worrying about it". I agree. If it happens, it happens. If not, then you're just disappointing yourself for how many months or years to come?

This reminds me of life. You really like this girl and you want to go out with her. You fantasize about her for months, even a year, wondering "should I finally ask her out?" So you do and it goes HORRIBLY.

And you spend months obsessing about what a loser you see yourself as and how you didn't see the red flags, or didn't realize how audacious you were being.

That sums up life perfectly.

"And you spend months obsessing about what a loser you see yourself as and how you didn't see the red flags, or didn't realize how audacious you were being."

With any luck, you'll get past having this nonsense-stage, and then realize that even the "perfect" girl... "the one", has imperfections, and that there are so many women out there, that based on numbers alone, many women should come close to being a perfect match. Perhaps it is one of those many, with whom you will connect... or two... or three. Or perhaps you (and all of them) will simply choose to forego the typical arrangements.

No matter those choices, the best choice for you (regarding the horrible experience) is to learn from it, grow in wisdom, and achieve happiness through a more mutual relationship.

For, acquiring absolute perfection in a world filled with imperfect people is like living in a magical forest filled with unicorns, dragons, wizards, fairies, and a menagerie of wild creatures... all living in utopic peace and tranquility. It is simply a dream that cannot be realized outside the imagination of men.

Or something like that. :-)

Is the premise of Sam realistic in the sense of two male friends falling in love after one of them is turned into a woman? Wouldn't the guy that didn't become a woman always picture his friend who is now a woman as his former male self? Just seems very awkward to me. Why do they have to fall in love? Why can't the "new" woman just be single?

From: cj , 105 months, post #274
I'd spoiler-alert this post... but previous post(s)... so if you haven't read the previous posts, you might want to skip this one too.

"Is the premise of Sam realistic in the sense of two male friends falling in love after one of them is turned into a woman?"

Yes, it is plausible. See my answer to your next question.

"Wouldn't the guy that didn't become a woman always picture his friend who is now a woman as his former male self?"

That is possible. It is also possible that the two each see the other as more than just a friend or even best friend... but as someone whom they want to spend the rest of their life with. That's what I look for in a lasting relationship... well that and "Is she someone I could tolerate waking up next to every morning and spending the rest of my days being close to?" :-)

"Just seems very awkward to me. Why do they have to fall in love? Why can't the "new" woman just be single?"

That could have happened too, it is a plausible scenario. Though most people I know seem to have this unyielding desire to NOT be alone... sometimes ending up married (and divorced) multiple times while trying to find that right soulmate (or what-have-you). The "new" woman falling in love probably drives better ticket sales (just a guess)... and that's how I'd like to see it end. That it's the friend, nice touch, IMO.

Well I don't know if anyone else has any updated info, noticed its been awhile since anyone posted on this thread. However, I noticed a user "nickbrooks72" (don't know if it's actually nicholas brooks account or not) posted an answer to a question about release stating Early '16 about 5 days ago. So, I would assume that is a potential DVD or streaming service release. You can see the post here:

Oh cool. I bet that was the real Nick Brooks. So we can look forward to SAM and THE SEX TRIP in early 2016

"Wouldn't the guy that didn't become a woman always picture his friend who is now a woman as his former male self?"

That would be a major turn on for me. Women I am attracted too, I imagine them once being men and are trapped now as a women.
