This is a virtual reality thing right? So could some of our TG
fantasies finally come true?

Except the tactile / physical sensations / physical feel of the
experience.
I just hope to stick around long enough for fully-immersive VR to
become accessible to the masses.

It's interesting to read some Alien: Isolation reviews with Oculus.
I read one where a guy was marveling at his feminine hands, loss of
height and boobs.

The human mind is an amazing thing.

Not exactly true CJ, the other feelings can be tricked into the
brain, I dare say oculus rift alien isolation will not make it past
the demo phase. If included in the full game it might cause health
problems.
Neuroplasticity is a very strange and not fully understood
phenomena, it has been reported to cause 'feeling' (like the
plastic hand/body experiments), but the experiments have been slow
and well planned. Speeding things up or having sudden disparacies
between what your eyes and ears experience and the rest of the body
may cause motion sickness. Combine this with horror and feelings of
panic and you could well be punching the walls, throwing yourself
from your sofa or worse.
So I'd say while it's exciting, I'd not rush off to buy an oculus
just yet, give it time for the bugs to be squashed.
Thinkers crossed though, I can totally see games where you slowly
wonder around (without the stressful stimuli) being released when
the oculus is more affordable.

Guest #5, while your statements are reasonable, and do illustrate
the limitations of our understanding of the mind and our ability to
separate assumed perception from reality - You are probably quite
right... I still stand by the statement that the human mind is an
amazing thing. :-)

Don't worry the technology in research groups even more amazing
then the oculus rift, private experiments in thought transfer have
been going a good twenty years now.
Give it thirty years and you will just have another persons
feelings (that's what they see, hear, smell, feel the lot) beamed
straight into your brain, you won't need a computer game. Scary
though it will also include thoughts, so the morality of it may be
what holds such technology back would you for example, let a porn
star into your head so you can experience being her, if she then
could make you go to the bank and give you all her money?
You can find stuff on sciencedirect.com but it takes some digging,
or just google stuff, on 'thought transfer', I've been to a few
lectures on the subject, or look out for guest lectures by
companies like Emotiv... Helps if you live places like Washington,
but keep an eye out at your local university anyway.
The future will be a weird place that's for sure

So is "thought transfer" like swapping bodies?
|
From: guest

No as in imposing an idea... Sending feelings, thoughts and even
memories has been done with mice and in some cases humans, but
there is no 'swapping', it's more a way of tricking the brain.
Say I want a a coffee, but you do not. Now if I could hook up my
brain to yours then I can make you also desire a coffee.
The latest research story was a while back,
http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/biomedical/devices/computermediated-telepathy
I believe it as I've met scientists doing such research, but it
isn't as fantastical as the press would like its just tricking the
brain.
