"you CAN'T get a virus from an advertisement IF your computer is
properly protected."
Incorrect, you most certainly can. Zero-day exploits, poor
detection/action from protection software, user over-ride, slow
PC/page load coupled with "accidental" click. And second-hand from
IP address exposure coupled with content context and a good hacker
(or someone just "playing" with things).
Proper protection for me
INCLUDES an ad-blocker(s) as well as script controls, OS and
software patches/updates, sandboxing, safe browsing habits,
discriminatory site choices (or avoidance), firewalling, real-time
virus/malicious protection, AND the wholesale full-system scans on
a recurring basis. And I still don't feel 100% safe.
"Ad companies don't purposefully lace their ad's with malware."
The reputable ones don't. Spyware, on the other-hand sometimes is,
and Ad-ware has been pretty common.
From the more reputable companies, user interaction is required.
For the less-reputable, scripts and active content can drop them in
with the user being completely unaware and without the user having
to do a single thing other than visit the page where the content is
served.
Another note about nasties coming through ads. Just because the
host site is reputable, and the ad server company is reputable.
Sometimes an advertiser will include an ad that while innocuous
could be modified to link to get (and thus attempt to execute)
remote content (code/script) that could be potentially harmful to
one's computer. You go to facebook (server 1), their ad server
(server 2) picks an ad (server 3), that ad then "plays" remote
content (server 4) that is malicious. If the malicious content is
known or follows a familiar pattern, your anti-virus/anti-malware
SHOULD protect you. If you're in a "sandboxed" environment, that
should protect you as well - though your session will be
compromised. If you are using an ad-blocker, the content never has
a chance to be executed in the first place.
That said. I still understand the need for ad-content to help
defray costs. I just don't have a workable suggestion short of
natively-hosted ads, where the webmaster for the site is directly
responsible for the code in the ad... or killing all the malicious
coders/ad-writers before they attack. Neither of which seems like a
very workable solution.

Now it's looking like that might be gone. Was on there in the last
few minutes to add something and when getting taken back to my
chapter, and checking a few others as well, I wasn't greeted by the
message to disable my adblocker nor was I met by the 5 second
countdown/click here thing.

writing.com is now countering ad blocking attempts using the hosts
method using some seriously, seriously bad javascript methods. If
you're smart, you'll know what you inject into the URL to avoid it,
if you're not, just disable javascript on the site and continue as
you normally would.

Mind saying what exactly that means? As in would their bad attempts
be able to screw you up?

Before they were just annoying folks running ad block pus in
firefox, they ignored anyone who routed ad servers to 127.0.0.1
(loopback). This is now being attacked too, so either you run the
site with ads, and expose yourself to potential viruses and malware
(as many poor quality ad servers host), or you go to the arduous
effort of reverting your hosts files (requires a restart of your
web browser and sessions), or you disable javascript on your
browser when visiting w.c.
Or did you want to know what the injection was to disable the ad
blocker script? Cause I'm not going to share that, not that it's
illegal or hacking, I just think that we're in somewhat of a grey
area here as it is blocking ads. So yea...

Well what I mean is that I haven't bothered disabling javascript
when visiting and, at least in the last hour or so when I visited,
haven't noticed anything. In fact for the last few days (most of
the last week really) I haven't even gotten the "please disable
blah blah blah" stuff.
So I guess I'm more asking if that would be because of what they've
done or if they've figured out a way to show you ads (thus putting
you at risk at bad ads serving malware) despite having ABP or what.

Sorry for the double post and sorry if that sounds vague and
ill-informed but I'm not exactly the most tech savvy person around,
ugh.

So... just found out about this forum and decided to pop in and
give a quick update on something I've been noticing.
I logged in to Writing.com today to check out what's been going on.
When I booted up an interactive story, however, I got the "Please
Disable Adblock" popup. I was kind of surprised, as I had logged in
yesterday with AdBlock disabled (for Writing.com, as well as a few
other sites I support) with little to no problems. I checked in my
addons window, and there was still an exception for writing.com in
AdBlock.
So I guess we're going to get the "disable adblock" message when,
in fact, adblock is already disabled. Heck, I even decided to
reboot firefox with ALL of my addons disabled. Still nothing. I
even tried booting up Internet Explorer (*shudders*) but it still
gave me the same message.
I'm just about done with this, to be honest. I don't mind ads, but
when I keep getting ads that are being blocked by my ESET firewall
due to (as the popup window says) hijacking attempts, I get
profoundly wary of the advertiser's (and the webmaster's) actions.
No degree of interactive storytelling community is worth the
possibility of having my computer compromised. I do banking on this
thing!

Yeah, I'm getting the same thing as well Some Random Guy. It's one
thing wanting people to disable ad-block, I get it. I understand
why, but when it starts affecting users who do NOT use ad-block...
there's a problem. A mistake or not, it's ridiculous. It's like
when developers/publishers force online DRM for a video game. It
doesn't help the legitimate consumers nor does it stop the pirates.
It's a double whammy.

I can confirm that this set-up even hinders one who is not actively
using any type of ad-block. Having tried in Firefox with it
disabled still brought up the pop-up/notification and wait screen.
Also attempted in Chrome with the same result. And I never had any
plug-ins installed for Chrome that could have blocked it. I only
use it to load websites when Firefox occasionally has trouble with,
such as my school forum. No need of ad-block there...
I don't have an issue with the 5 second wait so much, especially if
it was just included in the line of the website loading. I mean
this as when you click on a choice or first come to the site, it
goes straight to the countdown page, then removes the countdown
upon completion. That pop-up about using ad-block is the more
irritating part of the whole system. The accusation the site
portrays about using ad-block and denying the website funding, when
there is in fact nothing blocked, is what I find truly irritating.

I use iOS with photon flash browser(at least i was) ads manifest
and launch the app store repeatedly to try and make you download
free games that i don't want. Fortunately i have another browser
that's not so susceptible.

With iOS on iPhone with Safari browser I sometimes get sent to the
App Store or another page every time I try to move forward or back
in an interactive story. Maybe this happens less when one is logged
in. If they're trying to get people not to use the site, it's the
right way.

Ok, so the hosts file blocking appears ot be working for meat the
moment. Go figure.
