This is awesome. Day one of shooting has begun and it looks like
they were filming a scene from later in the movie because a twitter
pic popped up today featuring Natalie Knepp. From what I can tell
Sam stylistically evolves over the film like Lalola or LouisLouise.
She starts off very rough wearing her guy clothes, then she becomes
presentable, then fashionable and then finally she is described as
"a vision of complete and total loveliness." This picture from the
set is feels like it's from the end of the movie.

I've got a theory that SAM might have been inspired
(coincidentally) by a Fictionmania Spells R Us story. The great
character actor Stacey Keach is billed as "The Shopkeeper" and I
have a feeling that Sam gets drunk, stumbles into Keach's shop, and
says something to Keach who casts a spell on him. Maybe, like in
BIG with Tom Hanks he makes a wish that backfires. I'm gonna guess
like in BIG or LALOLA Sam has an opportunity to change back at the
end. I personally hope he doesn't.
Here's Samantha, in the shop with Keach.
http://instagram.com/p/i2KOUIEO4o/
Judging by her hair, makeup and dress this is at the end of the
movie
I also have a wild guess theory that they are shooting
chronologically backwards because they will cut Natalie's hair.
We'll see.

Thanks thesaint, very much appreciated. I would like to see
anything you care to share from your sources. I'm glad to see she
looks not just beautiful but smart and stylish. You know a lot more
about the script than I do but it seems as if her character will be
not just beautiful but smart and ladylike. Not a bimbo. Hope its
the way Samantha's character goes. Thanks again!

I hope so too, about Samantha not changing back. If she lets her
hair grow long as the movie progresses, maybe that's a sign that
she won't change back? Amanda chopped all her hair off in the
middle of Switch, a sign that she was never comfortable with
becoming female.

Thesaint you're doing a great job keeping up to speed with
everything! I am a little skeptical of the hair theory, though.
Although it might seem more "realistic" for the hair length to stay
the same, it seems like so much trouble for something so little. If
your whole body can transform genders is it really too much to let
the hair grow a few inches out?
I think you might be onto something with the shopkeeper theory. Sam
is "magically transformed" meaning that someone or something does
it to him. I wonder if it could be like that French movie Si
Jevi(not sure how it's spelled) where the guy mysteriously
transforms into a woman after cursing them (leaving us to believe
that it's God).
In other news thank god Sam's imdb page has finally been updated to
"filming".
|
From: guest (thesaint)

I admit, the hair theory is a little far fetched.
There is a character on imdb named Johnny DNA and in the script,
when Samantha is trying to convince Doc that she's Sam, she grabs
some scissors, snips some of her hair and tells him to run a DNA
test. Sam, being the womanizer that he is, gave blood for a
paternity suit. I was kind of hoping that Sam became a female
version of himself and that the movie took place over the course of
months. But as far as magic is concerned I'd be happy if they just
dye Brock Harris's (Sam) hair and give him brown contact lenses to
make him look more like Natalie.
I'm also pretty sure that Sam won't change back. The script pages
that I readaudition pages for the role of Samantha that show her
on the first day of her transformation and then skip to the endClick to show spoiler

Also, part of what I like is that they describe Sam as being crass
and having a foul mouth. In the pages that I've read Sam slowly
bites her tongue and speaks more like a lady. She's still Sam but
being a woman makes him a better person. And that trumps Switch for
me.

I don't understand the "Looks at her watch" line. Does it mean
she's getting bored?
|
From: guest (thesaint)

Sorry. In the context of the script it appears to be a "Cinderella
moment". This is the defining moment of the movie and then, in
bold, she looks at her watch. Clearly she's lost track of time . .
. and since the twitter pic shows her in a party dress opposite The
Shopkeeper I'm guessing he offers her a chance to change back like
in Lalola.

Is this going to be straight to dvd or will it be one of those
movies that is released in a very small amount of theaters but will
be available on demand the same day?
|
From: guest
, 125 months, post #90 |
It could be that Stacy Keach is only available right now, so
they're shooting the scenes involving him first so that he's free
to do whatever else he needs to do; it's not unusual for movies to
be filmed that way. The hair is an interesting theory too, though.
If Natalie Knepp keeps posting pictures and her hair gets
progressively shorter, I guess we'll know.
The more I hear about this movie, the more I'm looking forward to
it. It really does sound like the TG movie I've always wanted. :)

Why would Sam have to stay a woman to learn a lesson? Isn't that a
little sexist? I mean couldn't a man still learn lesson after
spending some time in a woman's body then going back to his
original body? Why should he have to keep a body that has breasts
and a vagina just to prove that he learned a lesson?

Hiya thesaint! Thank you so much for the updates about Sam! I've
been so looking forward to this movie getting made and released and
am so happy it's looking like that's finally going to happen. :D
<3
I have a question for you, since you seen at least some of the
script. Will the transformation from Sam into Samantha be on
screen? Like will we get to see Sam turn into Samantha? Watching
the transformation is one of my fave things about TG stories. :)

@guest, post #91
True, and the story could end up going either way, I guess (I
haven't read the spoiler posted above that's in the audition
script), although it sounds like a fairly sweet story, with romance
in it (a rom-com?).
If that's the case, while Sam is, to some degree, a sexist jerk at
the beginning, and "needs to be taught a lesson", he apparently
does fall for his (presumably straight) best friend, and vice
versa. So, unless they're going for a 'BIG'-like bittersweet ending
in which Sam changes back, there's the love connection between
Samantha and the best friend, fully after Sam has "learned his
lesson", to consider.
So, would the movie want to then destroy what it has set up? Maybe
Sam finds true, meaningful love as Samantha, where the former Sam
may have had only a string of shallow, one-night stands.
One other point to ponder: in most of the magical non-bodyswitching
TG/TF movies I've seen, the transformed protagonist doesn't change
back at the end... they either remain female (SWITCH, CLEO/LEO,
ZEROPHILIA), die (DR. JEKYLL & SISTER HYDE) or become something
else (GOODBYE CHARLIE).

I'm glad everybody appreciates my (boarding on obsessive) research.
I'm with "guest post 90" - this sounds like its shaping up to be
the TG movie I've always wanted.
Since Sherlock has made it's brilliant series 3 premiere I most
confess a lot of my assumptions are in the spirit of the great
detectives deductive reasoning approach.
I've got very little information but I've been trying to shape a
picture based on the clues that I've found. So, to try and answer a
couple of questions . . .
It's more than likely they are shooting Stacy Keaches scenes to
accomidate his schedule. Jan 6th was the first day of shooting and
the day people seemed to be returning from Holiday breaks. Mr.
Keach has been promoting a book he wrote last December and he just
finished shooting scenes from another movie with Moretz in late
November. He's also going to be promoting the Alexander Payne film
Nebraska which has been getting Oscar buzz. Stacy Keach has been
attatched to SAM for awhile so he's probably doing them a favor and
getting his scenes out of the way. However, Brock Harris hasn't
tweeted that he's back in NY and Keach's character seems to bookend
the film if we go with the ShopKeeper / SRU theory.
The transformation: I'm gonna say there will be no visible
transformation. I found an interview with Sarah Scott on youtube,
from when she was still considered for Sam, and she described the
plot as "Sam gets really drunk one night, he's a total womanizer,
and wakes up the next day as me; A woman."
I'm wondering if he got drunk because he's celebrating winning a
paternity suit they mention, or if he's depressed for some reason.
It's not clear.
As for why does he have to stay stuck as a woman, there are a
couple of reasons. First and foremost this movie has been described
as a Romantic Comedy and the tagline says "falls in love with his
best buddy." The script pages seem to hint (and even confirm) that
this is a warm, humorous and romantic film where the two friends
mutually fall in love. That would seem to really go against the
tone of the film if they pull the rug out from under the audience
and have Sam change back. Doc is dating Cynthia and it's eluded
that Cynthia is wrong for Doc. It's possible Doc is going to marry
Cynthia and maybe Sam gets drunk because he's depressed he's losing
his best friend i.e. the only meaningful relationship in his life.
The script also hints that Sam becomes a better person after
becoming a woman. He stops swearing, Cynthia is presented as
"looking like Hell", people seem to like Samantha better than Sam
and there is a wonderful bit where Samantha sticks up for a female
coworker. There's a nice TG parallel where it seems Samantha
identifies herself as a woman when . . .

So, my guess is they are going to go the CLEO/LEO route and having
Sam stay Samantha. The tone just feels like the audience will want
these two to be together and the chance that he could revert to
being a man will cause some 3rd act tension.

Also, if you guys want to read the pages I have go to
http://www.showfax.com/
Click on New York > Features > scroll down to SAM > and
for just a little money purchase the sides for Samantha, Margaret
and Stephen. Mrs. Goldfarb is just a repeat of the Samantha side
with the line about blondes revised.
Also, send a message to https://www.facebook.com/305Media on
Facebook. Just send a quick message that you're excited about the
movie. Maybe if enough people send them messages they'd update
their facebook page with status updates. You never know.
This project sounds like a big deal for their Production company
and I bet they'd appreciate that there's already some buzz. They've
got some well known New York actors in their movie but it's still a
low budget film. It'll probably go the film fest circuit and
hopefully On Demand.

What if those first pics on set are not really the last scene of
the movie but maybe the movie starts at when the main character has
decided on staying a woman and the whole movie is a flashback? It's
possible. I still think it's sexist to force a man to change into a
woman just to teach a lesson. Shouldn't that man be given a chance
to change on his own without having to have a vagina and breasts?
|
From: guest (thesaint)
, 125 months, post #97 |
It's possible that this is a flashback but I kind of doubt it. In
the Spanish Lalola they did that but in a RomCom film the payoff is
the romance. There wouldn't be any tension if we knew Sam was stuck
as Samantha and part of the fun and hook of the plot is being
introduced to this sexist jerk and seeing what he turns into.
That's just my 2 Cents.
It looks like they only had Stacy Keach available for 2 days and I
haven't seen a tweet from Brock Harris (Sam) since the 5th - so
there are a couple of possibilities about what they shot on the 6th
and 7th.
1) The crew secured the location for 2 days and Brock and Natalie
shot their scenes with Stacy Keach. If Keach is playing a magical
Shopkeeper then Brock would shoot his Sam scene from the beginning
and Natalie's would shoot her Samantha scene from the end. This is
what I believe they did.
2) The other possibility is Stacy Keach shot only with Natalie, and
his character didn't magically change him, but is instead an
unexpected mentor like The Wolfman Jack scene in American graffiti
(or Stan Lee in Mallrats) where the character meets a stranger who
helps them make a decision.
The script page has Samantha at a formal party, in a dress looking
lovely, and is alarmed when she looks at her watch. It makes sense
that she runs to the shop to speak with the Shopkeeper. Maybe at
the beginning of the story The Shopkeeper tells Sam the change is
temporary and by the end she wants him to make it permanent.

Thanks thesaint for all of these great updates. SAM is indeed
shaping up as the tg movie I've been waiting for, for a long time.
While a part of me roots for it to go to movie theaters, and become
at least a modest hit, a part of me would be glad to see it go
straight to dvd.

BTW, based on the script and the over-use of the word "fuck" (by
Sam) leads me to think this movie is going to be rated R. That
would be a great sign that they wanted to try taking the movie to
more interesting grounds.
Back to the shopkeeper theory... the background of the shop in the
picture makes it seem like a comic book store so I wonder why
Samantha would go there (and in a dress!) unless the guy had
something to do with the transformation. But I keep waffling back
and forth on what I think is the cause. I can only think of three
possible things that cause the transformation...
1. A scorned ex-girlfriend. If it follows the lalola script I could
see his mad ex-girlfriend finding a witch to put the spell on him.
There isn't a "witch" mentioned in the cast but maybe it's one of
the older women.
2. The shopkeeper as speculated. This would definitely be the most
interesting because it would give Samantha a way to change back.
3. God/Karma/or some mystery. I could see Sam getting drunk and
saying a lot of bad things about women as he's going to bed and
then wake up a woman. I think it might be a complete mystery and
can only let the viewer speculate and come up with their own
theories involving a higher power. Sarah Scott had said he gets
really drunk and wakes up as a woman, not that he meets a magical
shopkeeper who casts a spell on him.
I really wish they would give more info. And I hope that I'm not
interpreting the bits and pieces of info in the way that I want the
movie to be made and not how it's actually going to be made. More
often than not tg films are a disappointment.

From: guest (thesaint)

I know what you mean, Rush about getting your hopes up and then
having a TG film let you down. I really started to let my
speculation get the best of me with my hair shortening theory and
shooting the movie back to front.
I really wish there were more tweets and instagram pics. Most of
the cast and listed crew don't Facebook or Tweet. I feel really
lucky that we got a pic of Samantha in a dress. Very lovely.
Hopefully, if we're lucky, we could get some more pics over the
month of shooting.
The only other tidbit I know did see that they are shooting in
Astoria next week. All I know about that location is that they shot
Goodfellas and A Bronx Tale there.
I'm loving that it'll be rated R and that there is a chance it'll
have some more mature themes. I liked how Samantha gets her ass
grabbed and how she's kinda taken back by being called a "bitch." I
bet you anything if there was one more page in the audition side
we'd see Doc defend Sam and punch Stephen. I'd like that. I'm also
reaaaalllllyyyy curious what Sam was talking about when Doc says
"Sam, I don't want to talk about this." // "Ok, fine. Suit
yourself."
I wonder if the sports scene will still be football if it's
currently 10 below in New York? I like the idea of Sam not being
able to play because she's a girl.
I'm curious if they'll explore Sam getting a period like in Dating
the Enemy. I'm also curious how long the story takes place over.
LouisLouise seemed to take place from Autumn to Spring. The SAM
script seems to indicate Sam will acclimate over time. How long
will that take and can they fake it with stock footage and shooting
mostly in interiors.
I'm not sure it's a comic book shop or a hobby/model shop. I see
mostly models in the background but there is a book and some
magazines on a rack between Stacy Keach and Natalie Knepp.
I'm curious about the catalyst for the transformation myself. I'd
like to think Stacy Keach is playing a Michael Caine / "Mr.
Destiny" type of role. In that movie James Belushi goes to a bar,
complains about his life and Michael Caine changes his past to
effect his future. I like the idea of The Shopkeeper being a
benevolent force who changes Sam for the better, rather than an
angry witch who curses him and then Sam adapts and falls in love.
I'm guessing God/Karma/Force of Nature or magical Shopkeeper.
They mention a blood test for a paternity suite but if the woman
who is trying to prove that he's the father why would she curse
him? Plus, an illegitamate child would really darken the romantic
comedy tone of the film. But lets say it is a Lalola like curse . .
.
The old cast list is still available here . . .
http://freedownloadmovies.tv/movie/Sam_(2013)
. . . and there are some roles that haven't been filled like "The
Nervous Model", "The Client", "Pizza Boy", "Lover". I think if the
Lover had more of a part to play in his transformation (not just
kicked out the next morning) they'd give her character a name. Then
there is Stephanie slamming the door as Sam turns away. She might
fit the bill as someone with a motive to curse Sam, but I think
she'll be a co-worker who makes Sam realize, once he's Samantha
that he was a jerk. April Wilkner (stephanie) has played a
half-dressed fashion model and the script alludes to Sam's office
as being one of New York's most successful modeling agencies. I
don't know. It's fun to speculate.
Here's how I think the movie will play out. I'll be curious if
months from now what I get wrong
