Criminal Minds episode "The Lesson"
Inanimate - Human victims are kidnapped by an Unsub (Brad Dourif) who transforms a female and Male victim into puppets to put on a one act play called "The Robbery." It is a reenactment of a robbery gone wrong involving his father, a master puppeteer. Only the unsub wants a happy ending with his puppets as guardian angels stopping the murder of the father and son he kidnaps to play the roles of the victims. Some of the male victims had their hair dyed black and dressed in costumes supplied by a shop run by the unsubs' relative. This led the FBI to discover that the unsub was desperate to have a male lead to replace the ones who died during the breaking of the arm and leg bones to achieve the effect of being strung up like a marionette.
A puppet named "Mr. Conrad" plays the role of the robber and is in the unsub's mind. The "audience" is actually staging props that in the mind of the unsub, is real. The theatre that he is performing his play and torture of the victims belonged to his dad and his nephew supplied the costumes for the play. FBI agents followed the nephew to his uncle to discover the play in progress.
Later in the series, The Replicator (Mark Hamill) replicates the marionette transformation process on several victims, as he wants to replicate all the previous unsubs' MO's (removal of a leg from a victim to sew it onto another victim, etc).
